POSITION OVERVIEW
The Relief Support Worker ensures efficient and effective support is provided to Street Haven clients. The Relief Support Worker provides opportunities for clients to reach their potential, particularly in relation to independence, social interaction, self-determination, and participation.
The Relief Support Worker will report to the Director of Housing and Shelter Services but can pick up shifts across multiple programs, including Housing & Shelter Services, as well as Addiction, Mental Health, and Outreach Services. Relief employees are required to bid for and work a minimum of two (2) offered assignments in any calendar month, specifically overnight shifts at any sites of Street Haven, in order to remain an active employee with Street Haven.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Client support
- Supports completion of intakes, admissions and orientations
- Conducts mental health and wellness assessments and follow-up
- Assesses and assists with client personal needs e.g., hygiene, nutrition, medical, and/ or emotional
- Makes appropriate referrals, provides information and advocates with support services to assist clients with meeting their personal goals
- Supports and facilitates stabilization of clients during their stay
- Has a foundation for and understands guiding principles of group facilitation
- Identifies, intervenes and effectively deals with crisis, conflict situations and emergency situations that arise
- Advises clients of their rights and responsibilities
- Explains, monitors and reinforces Street Haven policies and procedures to ensure a safe, mutually respectful environment
- Promotes a mutually supportive environment that emphasizes collaborative approaches and values the contributions of all members, including staff and clients
- Monitors the safety, security, and general welfare of clients and facility during shift and documents shelter happenings and client activities as necessary
- Communicates with shelter case managers regarding client care
- Other duties as required
Program support
- Works within a multi-disciplinary team, liaising with others to promote a supportive and respectful environment
- Ensures flow of critical information, including documentation and shift change, to bring forward issues and occurrences that take place while on shift
- Promotes a mutually supportive environment that emphasizes collaborative approaches and values the contributions of all members, including staff and clients
- Other duties as required
Housekeeping maintenance
- Uses Street Haven ticket system for IT and property management support and maintenance
- Maintain and complete any housekeeping maintenance that is required
- Performs clean up duties, house chores and laundry using Street Haven sanitation and cleaning procedures
- Refills supplies and food containers and restocks supplies
- Services meals and completes kitchen clean up chores as needed
- Other duties as required
Administration
- Responsible for the admission, discharge and profile creation on the database for new clients
- Develops and maintains accurate and confidential user of service record keeping in accordance with Catalyst and SMIS database Street Haven policies and procedures
- Maintains accurate real time case notes, client data and other records
- May be required to prepare shift report forms, chore sheet, cash control and the overnight checklist
- Adherence to Shift Link database terms and usage
- Other duties as required
Qualifications and requirements
Education and Experience

Degree or 2-year diploma from a registered community college in human services, social services or related community work or a suitable combination of education and experience.

1-2 years’ relevant experience, preferably in social services

Minimum 1 years’ experience working with marginalized women facing complex mental health and addiction issues

Certificates in First Aid, CPR, crisis intervention and prevention and harm reduction an asset
Proficient knowledge in the following areas
- Systemic issues of women who are facing of poverty, mental health, addiction, abuse and social isolation
- Community resources for individuals who are homeless, at risk of homelessness, living in poverty, or living with mental health or addiction issues
- Psycho-social rehabilitation, recovery model, motivational interviewing and journey of change and its influence on client outcomes
- Privacy legislation and policies within the organization related to confidentiality of client information
- Database entry and navigation
- Microsoft Office, internet, email
The following skills and attributes
- Ability to identify and assess risk and implement strategies that minimize risk to self, the client, and others
- Strong problem solving, conflict resolution and mediation skills within a solution-focused framework
- Ability to de-escalate crisis situations and provide supportive services to women from a trauma informed, harm reduction perspective
- Ability to provide resources and education in a group setting
Working environment
- Employees may accept casual/ relief shifts posted through ShiftLink at any Street Haven program site, based on operational needs and availability. To maintain active relief employment status, employees are required to work a minimum of two (2) overnight shifts House per month.
- Evenings and overnights
- This position may be single or double shifted
- The environment is dynamic and unpredictable and involves regular exposure to clients who have been homeless and are living with challenges associated with mental health and addictions.
Bona Fide Occupational Requirements (Physical Demands)
To safely perform the essential duties of this position, successful candidates must be able to meet the following bona fide occupational requirements:
- Safely lift, carry, transfer, or pivot up to 23 kg (50 lbs) unassisted when required.
- Perform frequent standing, walking, bending, crouching, reaching, and other physical movements throughout the shift.
- Respond promptly to emergencies, including assisting clients during falls, evacuations, or crisis situations when required.
- Work safely in a physically demanding, fast-paced, and unpredictable environment.
- Where applicable, safely operate or assist with client-support equipment (e.g., mechanical lifts, gait belts, and slider sheets) in accordance with Street Haven policies and training.
Where we work
This role is based in Downtown Toronto and GTA, and requires working on-site during the hours of work. Some travel to other sites may be needed.
