Electrical Engineer High Power Lab

What you'll do

The High Power Lab (HPL) is the largest grid-connected short-circuit testing facility in North America and operates

independently of utilities and manufacturers. It has controlled power level capabilities for short-duration single-phase tests

up to 400 MVA and three-phase tests up to 1,000 MVA. Our team of skilled technologists and engineers conduct testing

services including load and fault-interrupting tests, arc-resistance tests, momentary and short-time current tests, and failure-
mode and exploratory tests involving applying precisely controlled distribution-level 60 Hz voltage and current to test

objects.

Reporting to the Division Manager, the ideal candidate will bring an understanding of electrical engineering principles with a

focus on high power testing. Applicants with previous relevant experience and project management skills in a fast-paced

environment are highly desired. Other duties include :

  • Support the day-to-day operations of the high power lab, including setup, calibration, and maintenance of testing

equipment.

  • Create test proposals including costing for various tests and reviewing relevant test standards in a timely manner.

  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously and demonstrate strong coordination skills with internal teams and external

clients to ensure timely completion and delivery of results.

  • Troubleshoot engineering problems and technical issues encountered during testing, propose solutions and implement

corrective measures as needed.

  • Develop innovative engineering techniques and apply theoretical and practical knowledge in testing, analysis and problem

resolution

  • Support failure analysis investigations and contribute engineering knowledge on test procedures to ensure accuracy,

achievement of required results and adherence to accepted engineering practice.

  • Oversee the maintenance and improvements of laboratory equipment and operations with emphasis on achieving quality

and cost-effectiveness

  • Maintain professional relationships and communication with other departments, outside consultants, contractors and

suppliers to effectively gather and relay information and resolve issues of concern

What you bring

  • A recognized bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. A post graduate degree in Power Engineering or related areas

is preferred.

  • Minimum three years of Engineering experience in one or more of the following broad fields : leading Electrical tests,

progressive specialized expertise in the planning, preparation and execution of tests and equipment condition assessment.

  • Working knowledge of the fundamentals of transmission and distribution equipment design, operation, and electrical

testing.

  • Registration (or ability to immediately register) as a professional engineer with the Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (i.e.,

non-British Columbia registrations are acceptable as long as there is an ability to immediately transfer the accreditation).

as part of the interview process.

Job Status: Full-Time Regular

Job Grade : P1

The successful applicant may be required to work days outside of a typical work week, such as a Tuesday to Saturday shift.
