About the job
As a team leader of the Central Traffic Operation team, you'll provide guidance and oversight to new challenges daily and make a real difference. Your role will involve coordinating and managing operations, building the framework of procedures and guidelines the team works within, and resolving escalated and high-pressure issues. On a rotating shift basis, you will:

Co-ordinate, schedule, monitor and guide the daily activities of the team
-
Lead the team by providing guidance and setting priorities during emergency situations and fostering a positive and collaborative work environment

Develop and train the team on new procedures and practices
-
Complete quality control and assurance activities and make decisions about the effective delivery of traffic management services
-
Plan the implementation of new software and systems, investigate and troubleshoot operational issues, and prepare recommendations and reports
-
Co-ordinate ministry contractors and internal and external partners
Learn how Traffic Operations Centres help people plan their routes and travel safely across the province through the 511Ontario 511 traveller information service. Information included on the Ontario 511 map page is updated through incident reports created by the Traffic Operation Centres across Ontario.
What you bring to the team
Technical Knowledge
You have experience with and understanding of:

traffic management systems and related tools and systems including their theory, principles, practices, and operations
-
traffic planning and incident and emergency response
You understand legislation and directives about the provincial highway network, freeway and highway maintenance and construction, and emergency response and can create policy manuals and operational guidelines.
Leadership Skills
You can:
- provide technical leadership, expertise and guidance
- coordinate and lead operations, set priorities, and schedule work assignments
- thrive within a high-volume environment with changing priorities, high profile issues, and requirements to respond quickly to urgent issues
- co-ordinate with internal and external partners
Communication and Interpersonal Skills
You can:
- discuss and convey complex, sensitive and confidential issues
- prepare detailed data-based reports and correspondence
- provide advice and recommendations for technical and policy solutions
- build and maintain relationships when collaborating with different offices, partners, agencies, and emergency services
Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills
You can:
- conduct reviews, investigations, and projects on operational issues
- examine traffic flows, make traffic routing decisions, and develop contingency plans for emergencies
- multi-task in time-sensitive situations to assess and implement traffic management services
- evaluate traffic management system components and operations
Computer Skills
- you are proficient with computers and with software such as word processing, spreadsheets, database applications and browser-based user interfaces
- you can use different types of technology and software to monitor, track and interpret multiple sources of information at the same time
- you can troubleshoot operational problems with technology and computer systems
Hours of Work
- This position requires rotating shift work in a 24/7 environment, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
