Job Description
The Institute of Indigenous Peoples' Health located at McMaster University is seeking a Research Coordinator IV to support senior level activities.
General Description
Responsible for managing the daily operations of multiple research projects ensuring that all aspects of project protocol are adhered to. Applies specialized knowledge to initiate, design, develop, coordinate, and manage major research projects across multiple sites. Develops collaborations and partnerships with research user groups.
Representative Duties & Responsibilities

Plan and coordinate all aspects of multiple research projects across multiple sites.

Develop inter-disciplinary, inter-institutional, and inter-sectoral research collaborations.

Develop budgets for research projects.
-
Troubleshoot problems at all stages of project development and implementation and assist with modifying protocols or project procedures to address challenges.

Participate with a team in the development and authoring of research protocols.

Recruit project participants and enlist agencies to refer participants.
-
Review referrals and keep track of intakes from various referral sources.
-
Develop an implementation plan for research projects.
-
Design promotional strategies and related materials to encourage participation and support for the research project.
-
Perform both quantitative and qualitative analyses of research data.

Interview project participants.
-
Facilitate focus group sessions with project participants.
-
Coordinate and manage the collection, delivery, entry, verification, analysis, and reporting of data.
-
Oversee the design of databases, data collection forms, error checking methods, and related programs for collection, analysis, and reporting.

Apply specialized knowledge and scientific principles to review, critically appraise and interpret published literature.

Write sections of scientific papers, funding proposals, and abstracts.

Develop estimates of time and resources for research projects.

Use statistical software to analyze data and interpret results.
-
Write data management and operations documentation for projects.
-
Liaise between the project centre and remote project sites and personnel.

Ensure that the relevant research methodology is applied and all research material is handled in accordance with established protocols, policies, and procedures.

Develop presentations and present information and training sessions to project personnel and project participants.

Keep project participants informed of project progress through regular reports and newsletters.

Implement and maintain research project budgets.
Create financial projections and make adjustments to research project budgets throughout the fiscal year.

Exercise appropriate controls, monitor, and reconcile accounts.

Conduct literature searches.
Supervision
- Supervise and direct the activities of up to 4 continuing employees.
- Ongoing responsibility for hiring and supervising 10 or more casual employees at any one time.
- Provide orientation and show procedures to others.
Qualifications
- Master's degree in a relevant field of study.
- Requires 6 years of relevant experience, including 1 year for full supervision.
The CIHR-IIPH Research Coordinator IV plays a central role in advancing CIHR-IIPH's strategic priorities by ensuring effective coordination, alignment, and delivery across the Institute's portfolio of initiatives and activities. Working at the intersection of strategy, partnerships, and execution, this role focuses on connecting and organizing work across multiple streams, ensuring that priorities are translated into action and that projects progress in a coordinated and efficient way. This position also serves as a critical internal coordination function, supporting IIPH leadership by tracking priorities, preparing key engagements, and ensuring follow-through across a fast-paced and complex environment.
The role will report directly to the Associate Scientific Director and Assistant Director, working closely with IIPH leadership, CIHR Institutes, and external partners to ensure alignment, momentum, and impact across the Institute. The role also works closely with the Strategic Initiatives Lead and other team members, complementing initiative-specific work by providing overarching coordination, integration, and support to ensure alignment and momentum across all areas of activity. This role requires a high degree of autonomy, sound judgment, and the ability to manage multiple priorities, relationships, and workstreams simultaneously. The successful candidate will bring strong organizational and relational skills and demonstrated experience working with Indigenous communities and organizations, along with knowledge of Indigenous Data Sovereignty, Indigenous health research, and relevant policy contexts.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Ensure alignment, integration, and visibility across projects led by various team members.

Track progress, timelines, and deliverables across initiatives, ensuring accountability, and follow-through.

Identify gaps, overlaps, and opportunities to strengthen coordination and overall effectiveness.

Coordinate and track priorities across the CIHR-IIPH leadership team, ensuring alignment and timely completion of key commitments.

Support the Associate Scientific Director and Assistant Director in managing competing priorities, including tracking action items and deadlines.

Prepare leadership for meetings, engagement, and decision points (briefings, agendas, speaking notes, and follow-up materials).

Establish and maintain systems to track projects, decisions, and commitments across the team.
-
Anticipate needs and proactively address gaps to ensure leadership is well-prepared and supported.

Support alignment and collaboration across internal and external stakeholders.
-
Coordinate input and contributions across team members, contractors, and partners to ensure cohesive outputs.
-
Support respectful and effective engagement with Indigenous communities and organizations.
-
Coordinate and support the work of contractors, consultants, and project contributors, ensuring clarity of roles, timelines, and deliverables.

Monitor quality and alignment of outputs with project objectives and IIPH priorities.

Participate in and/or lead working group(s) on initiatives relevant to the Institute's strategic priorities.

Provide strategic and operational support to IIPH leadership on emerging priorities and initiatives.

Contribute to the development of key materials, including reports, briefings, and presentations.

Support knowledge mobilization efforts to ensure initiatives translate into meaningful impact for Indigenous communities.

Other related duties as may be required, including assisting with the planning and support of Institute strategic initiatives, events, and operations.
