Position Description:

Reporting to the Director, Student Well-being and Support, the Senior Manager, Counselling and Student Well-being provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for Counselling services within Student Success and plays a central role in advancing the Polytechnic’s commitment to student mental health, well-being, and success. The role is accountable for establishing the direction, priorities, and continuous development of Counselling and Student Well-being services, including business planning, service innovation, and the implementation of initiatives that enhance quality, access, and effectiveness. In close partnership with academic divisions, service areas across the Polytechnic, and other areas within Student Well-being and Support, the Senior Manager leads the coordinated delivery of responsive, integrated, and student-centred supports that address diverse needs and contribute to a whole-campus approach to well-being and a healthy campus community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership for Counselling services, setting direction for service delivery, annual planning, team priorities, and continuous improvement.
  • Lead the ongoing evolution of Counselling services to ensure they are responsive, student-centred, and aligned with institutional priorities, including Stepped Care, health promotion, equity-informed practice, and accessible virtual supports.
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and regular review of counselling and student mental health policies, procedures, and protocols, ensuring compliance with applicable legislation, regulatory standards, privacy requirements, and human rights obligations.
  • Lead and develop a high-performing team through supervision, coaching, performance management, team communication, and professional development, while ensuring staff maintain appropriate professional standards and competencies for practice in Ontario.
  • Provide institutional leadership for mental health crisis response, including oversight of crisis intervention processes, mental health concern protocols, and tragic event response, in collaboration with the residence, Public Safety and Emergency Management, Student Conduct, Accessible Learning Services, and other key partners.
  • Serve as a standing member of the Polytechnic’s integrated CARE team, providing senior clinical and strategic leadership in complex student situations involving distress, risk, behavioural concerns, and coordinated support planning.
  • Build and sustain strong partnerships across the Polytechnic to strengthen service integration, expand access to counselling supports, and ensure services are responsive to the diverse needs of students across campuses and communities.
  • Work collaboratively with the Senior Manager, Accessible Learning Services and other institutional partners to support effective resource allocation, operational consistency, and the implementation and optimization of systems, processes, and tools that support service delivery.
  • Lead the development of outreach, communications, and engagement strategies that increase awareness of counselling services, advance mental health literacy, and communicate the department’s impact and contributions to student success and well-being.
  • Represent the Polytechnic on internal committees, cross-functional initiatives, and external sector networks related to student mental health, counselling practice, and post-secondary well-being.
  • Contribute leadership to broader institutional initiatives that advance student well-being, safety, inclusion, and success across the Polytechnic.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Educational and Experience Requirements:

  • Graduate degree in Counselling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Occupational Therapy, Social Work, or a related field.
  • Registration with a relevant Ontario regulatory body is preferred (e.g., registered social worker, registered psychologist, registered psychotherapist, or occupational therapist, as applicable).
  • Minimum of nine (9) years of progressive leadership experience in mental health, counselling, therapy, or related services, ideally across a range of settings including hospital, community-based, educational, or other clinical environments.
  • Demonstrated leadership in the development, delivery, and oversight of services for students and/or clients experiencing complex mental health needs, distress, and crisis, including clinical risk management, service coordination, and systems navigation.
  • Experience providing clinical supervision, leadership, and guidance to counsellors, therapists, occupational therapists, and/or staff in training.
  • Experience working within collective agreements, policies, procedures, and relevant legislation related to service delivery, clinical practice, and client care.
  • Ongoing professional development and/or demonstrated knowledge of current therapeutic modalities, service models, and emerging practices relevant to the post-secondary context, such as Single Session Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, and mindfulness-based approaches.

Skills and Attributes:

  • Thorough knowledge of student mental health, common and emerging issues affecting post-secondary students, and evidence-informed approaches to promoting mental health, well-being, and student success.
  • Demonstrated understanding of strategic frameworks for supporting mental health in post-secondary settings, including whole-campus approaches, and the role of counselling services within broader institutional systems of care, retention, and student success.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, and professional standards related to service delivery, including privacy, documentation, human rights, accessibility, and risk management.
  • Deep commitment to anti-oppressive, equity-informed, and inclusive leadership, with demonstrated ability to apply principles of social justice, access, and belonging in the design and delivery of services.
  • Highly developed leadership, interpersonal, communication, strategic planning, problem-solving, and relationship-building skills, with the ability to foster collaboration and partnerships across diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide operational leadership for responsive, student-centred services across multiple locations, with a focus on quality, consistency, and continuous improvement.
