ABOUT THE ROLE

We’re looking for an Accountant, Energy Marketing to join our Finance team on a 12-month maternity leave contract. In this role, you’ll support the Supervisor, Energy Marketing, by ensuring accurate and compliant accounting for Energy Marketing transactions. You’ll prepare monthly accruals, journal entries, reports, and assist with financial reviews and reconciliations, while also leading process improvement initiatives across the Finance Shared Services team.

This position is based out of our Downtown Calgary Head Office, with the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

  • Complete month-end close activities, including journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with IFRS, US GAAP, SOX, and internal accounting policies.
  • Analyze financial results to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Prepare financial statements, management reports, and financial reporting assistance packages (FRAPs).
  • Support internal and external audits with documentation and responses.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders and cross-functional teams to ensure accurate reporting.
  • Contribute to process improvements, automation, and system enhancements.
  • Support integration of new business ventures and contracts into finance systems (ie. Allegro, GenPortal and SAP).
  • Maintain comprehensive and current documentation, outlining accounting treatments, data flows in automated processes, and key contractual terms that impact financial statements.
  • Communicate and collaborate with key internal stakeholders, corporate finance teams and cross function teams
  • Keep up to date with IFRS, Utility regulations, and industry best practices.

ABOUT YOU

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, or related discipline.
  • Pursuing or having recently acquired a professional accounting designation (such as CA, CPA, CMA, CGA) or an equivalent finance certification.
  • Minimum 1-3 years’ experience in accounting and finance, including operational and corporate accounting.
  • Experience in the utilities or energy industry, with specific knowledge of gas power generation/ renewable generation/ capital asset/ energy marketing] accounting preferred.
  • Knowledge and understanding of IFRS, SOX and accounting policies at large public companies.
  • Proficient in accounting systems, experience with SAP, Allegro or GenPortal preferred.
  • Advanced excel skills.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills with attention to detail.
  • High initiative, integrity, and adaptability to take on new responsibilities.
  • Quick learner with the ability to apply new tools and processes effectively while focusing on continuous improvement.
