Program Manager, Honours Health Sciences Program (HHSP) and BioPharmacology
The Bachelor of Health Sciences (Honours) Program is a four-year direct-entry program offered in the Faculty of Health Sciences. The Program uses an interdisciplinary approach to the study of health, wellness, and disease by examining health from biological, behavioural, and population-based perspectives. The program makes extensive use of inquiry-based pedagogy to emphasize student-driven learning, problem-solving, information literacy, collaboration, and communication. Instructors and facilitators for Honours Health Sciences Program are drawn from the full-time faculty from Departments across the Faculty of Health Sciences and part-time instructors with relevant expertise from the community.
The Program is widely recognized as a leader among undergraduate health programs and attracts over 7000 applicants for the 240 spots in our incoming cohort each year. The student body population is approximately 1000 students across the 4 years of the Program. The Honours Biology and Pharmacology Program combines courses from the Department of Biology in the Faculty of Science with core BioPharm courses in the Faculty of Health Sciences. The program provides learners with broad exposure to modern biological concepts and techniques, while specialized Pharmacology courses provide learners with theoretical and practical aspects of the actions and uses of drugs focused on human physiology and pathophysiology. The program offers an extensive mandatory co-operative education component to gain hands on experience in the field.
New Leadership Opportunity
The Faculty of Health Sciences is seeking a Program Manager, Honours Health Sciences and BioPharmacology who will be responsible for the effective and efficient management of the Honours Health Sciences and BioPharmacology program. The Program Manager is accountable to the Executive Director, Education Services, Assistant Dean, Honours Health Sciences Program and Director, BioPharmacology.
Core Accountabilities:
In a collaborative team environment, which embraces the values of integrity, teamwork, and inclusivity, the Program Manager, HHSP and BioPharm will serve as a leader and is accountable for the following:
- Oversee the administration of the Honours Health Sciences Program for 1000 full-time undergraduate students as well as the BioPharm Program of 22 undergraduate students.
- Establish polices and procedures for the successful operation of programs, as well as recommend relevant committee structures required to support the Program.
- Manages the Honours Health Sciences and BioPharm operational budget (approx. 3.7 million), including salaries, submits the annual budget and 5 month, and 8 month budget review and recommends strategies to ensure fiscal responsibility and effective use of resources.
- Approves all financial expenditures including vouchers, purchase orders, journal entries, and expense reports.
- Senior level representation and participation on University Committees, normally attended by Assistant and Associate Deans as well as Vice-Dean, Education Services. Committees include Assistant Dean Advisory, Undergraduate Council, Undergraduate Curriculum & Admissions, Enrolment Management, Associate Deans, Faculty Working Group. Provides advisory support to senior academic leaders in operational decisions involving student success. At times, represents the position of all undergraduate programs in the Faculty of Health Sciences as deemed appropriate after consultation with program leads to ensure accuracy and may be responsible for communicating outputs of committee action items to all Faculty of Health Sciences undergraduate program leads.
- Ensures that each student satisfies all program and University requirements prior to graduation and approves/denies students for graduation prior to Senate approval.
- Active and required participant in University system development at all levels; includes on-line grades, course registration, on-line degree audits, online reviewing reports (Mosaic).
- Responsible to provide department staff training and information on systems and enhancements.
- Liaises with Faculty of Science regarding the administration of the Coop Biology and Pharmacology program.
- Recommends changes to the undergraduate curriculum to the Assistant Dean (Honours Health Sciences) or Director (BioPharm) and/or relevant departments/programs based on history and future trend analysis.
Are you the right candidate?
This role requires a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience with exposure to managerial, human resources and financial support as well as a minimum of 1 year of supervisory experience.
The ideal candidate will hold a university degree or equivalent in education and/or experience as well as the following qualifications:
- Proven leader with demonstrated experience achieving positive results leading teams and performing a range of human resources functions including hiring, training, supervision, and mentoring, workforce planning and day-to-day operational work activities.
- Strong skills in strategic planning and implementation, operational planning, budgeting and optimization of resources, developing and implementing business plans, implementing processes and completing projects within expected timelines and budgets.
- Demonstrated tact, diplomacy, judgement, and leadership skills
- Excellent project management, attention to detail, rigor, problem-solving, risk assessment/management, public relations, problem solving and conflict resolution skills
- Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and thrive in a fast-paced environment, balancing competing deliverables and priorities
- Resilience to deal with emotionally charged or difficult situations with learners, administration, faculty and staff members
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and ability to work flexible hours
- Advanced skills and knowledge of computer software including Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software
- Confidence, professionalism and diplomacy required when an unpopular stand needs to be taken
- Ability to advocate effectively on behalf of the Honours Health Sciences and BioPharmacology programs and its interests
