Elk Island Public Schools is recruiting a term certain full-time Payroll Officer.
Elk Island Public Schools Central Services building is located in Sherwood Park, at 683 Wye Road. Providing services for the Division, Central Services is comprised of eight departments, in addition to the Board of Trustees. The departments include Education Executive, Communication Services, Facility Services, Student Transportation, Human Resources, Financial Services, Supports for Students and Information Technologies. Financial Services is home to 22 of our EIPS employees.
- Commencing October 6, 2025
- Ending March 31, 2027
- 37.5 hours per week (Monday to Friday- 7.5 hours per day)

JOB SUMMARY
As an integral team member of Financial Services, the Payroll Officer plays a critical role in ensuring the accurate and timely running of payroll for approximately 2000 employees. This role is a member of a team of Payroll Officers, who will coordinate with schools and central department staff while reporting directly to the Payroll Manager.
Responsibilities include:

Prepares, reviews, and executes monthly and biweekly payrolls. Provides support and absence coverage for other Payroll Officers

Full cycle payroll duties include but not limited to ensuring appropriate approvals, proper budget distribution, benefits, pension, Record of Employments (ROEs), and additional related duties.

Makes complex calculations for payout of teacher contracts, leave of absences, salary increments, and FTE changes.

Keeps abreast of current on legislation, collective agreements, employee handbooks, school board policies, employment standards and all pension and union regulations.

Responds to internal inquiries regarding pay, benefits, and deductions. Completes related administrative work, ensuring proper retention or required documentation
Education and Experience: (Equivalencies will be considered)
- Payroll Compliance Practitioner designation (or working toward certification)
- Minimum of 3 years of related experience in payroll, preferably in the public sector
- Strong computer skills
- Previous school board experience would be an asset
- Experience with Powerschool’s atrieveERP would be an asset

Excellent organizational skills to work within tight, absolute deadlines

Strong interpersonal skills to be able to communicate effectively, even when under time pressure

Must be able to work collaboratively in problem solving unique situations
