About the role

Strathcona County is seeking a Senior Team Lead of Park Construction to lead the planning, coordination, and delivery of outdoor recreational amenities, assets and infrastructure projects throughout the community. This role plays a key part in transforming designs into high quality, safe, and accessible outdoor spaces by overseeing construction activities, coordinating internal crews and contractors, and ensuring projects are delivered on time, on budget, and to County standards.

Working within Recreation, Parks, and Culture, the Senior Team Lead of Park Construction provides hands-on leadership while maintaining a safe and healthy work environment. The successful candidate brings a strong background in construction coordination, project management, and people leadership, with a passion for building vibrant public spaces that meet the needs of the community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the planning, coordination, and delivery of outdoor recreation amenities assets and infrastructure construction projects, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with approved designs, standards, budgets, and schedules
  • Coordinate and oversee internal crews and external contractors during all phases of construction, including site preparation, installation, and project close‑out, while maintaining quality control and adherence to County and industry standards.
  • Provide on‑site leadership and technical direction during construction activities, addressing issues proactively, resolving conflicts, and mitigating risks to keep projects on track
  • Source supplies, materials and services through public procurement policies and practices
  • Apply construction and project management best practices to support timelines, cost control, resource allocation, and workflow planning across multiple concurrent projects
  • Complete various construction-related inspections with a high level of industry knowledge to ensure compliance and quality of product.
  • Ensure compliance with Occupational Health & Safety legislation, County policies, and safe work practices by conducting hazard assessments, safety meetings, site inspections, and incident investigations as required
  • Supervise, mentor, and support staff by coordinating work assignments, providing performance feedback, supporting training and development, and contributing to recruitment and onboarding activities
  • Maintain accurate records related to asset management, construction activities, and lifecycle planning, utilizing tools such as GIS, asset management systems, and Microsoft applications to support planning and reporting needs Collaborate with internal stakeholders across Recreation, Parks, and Culture and other County departments to support project delivery, asset sustainability, and continuous improvement in park development practices

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Completion of a post‑secondary diploma or degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering Technology, Landscape Architecture, Parks Management, Project Management, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience
  • Several years of progressive experience coordinating or supervising construction projects, preferably within a municipal or public‑sector environment
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating construction activities, contractors, and internal crews, including scheduling, quality control, and issue resolution in active worksite environments
  • Proven ability to lead and support employees through work planning, coaching, performance feedback, and day‑to‑day supervision, while fostering a safe and productive work environment
  • Strong working knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety legislation, safe work practices, hazard identification, and incident investigations
  • Experience working with asset management systems, GIS tools, and Microsoft Office applications to support planning, tracking, reporting, and lifecycle management
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with contractors, staff, and internal stakeholders across multiple disciplines Training and experience related to GIS, Asset Planner, Oracle, iTrak, Microsoft Office, MS Project or other similar applications is considered an asset.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Submission of a Satisfactory Criminal Record Check
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s licence and submission of a 5-year Driver’s Abstract with less than 7 demerits Ability to perform physical labour as part of the job duties and stand/walk for extended periods of time
