Career Opportunity

Looking for a new and exciting job opportunity? We are currently seeking for a General Upholsterer to join the Streetcar Maintenance Department. The position involves working Day Shift with Saturday and Sunday Off Days as assigned.

What You Will Do?

  • You will perform routine and varied upholstery and repair work on vehicles, vehicle seating, pieces of furniture and miscellaneous articles such as coin bags, tarps and covers using various types of fabrics (e.g. rubber, vinyl, plastic, woven, linoleum, etc.)
  • You will be responsible for setting up and operating computerized and industrial sewing machines.
  • You will perform daily and weekly maintenance on various sewing machines and related equipment.
  • You will lay out, measure and cut upholstery following design specifications or patterns.
  • You will also replace worn springs and other parts on furniture and seats.
  • You will install and/or replace padding and underlay.
  • You will affix fastening covering materials to frames.
  • You will cut and assemble hand-sewn articles such as bags, tool bags, etc.
  • You will prepare sketches complete with measurements and making upholstery patterns for new and replacement items, as required.

What Qualifications Do You Bring?

  • Your education will consist of training obtained through the completion of Grade 10 secondary.
  • You must also have completed college level courses related to upholstery that demonstrate ability to operate various types of sewing machines and related equipment; the ability to read and interpret patterns and design specifications; adhere to safety practices relevant to the work; estimate, measure, layout and cut fabric; or possess a minimum of one year practical work experience as an upholsterer in the upholstery industry.
  • You must have demonstrated ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • You must pass the Department’s test which corresponds in content to the knowledge, theory and/or practical requirements set out above.
  • Successful candidates must attend and successfully complete the Training Department’s programs for Safety Orientation/ Surface Maintenance.
  • Successful candidate must provide own tools as per the TTC’s established tool list.
