About The Role The Director, Business Development is a senior commercial role responsible for identifying, developing, and securing new business opportunities that support Next Hydrogen’s growth strategy and product roadmap. Reporting to the Chief Commercial Officer, this role focuses on building strong relationships with strategic customers, advancing hydrogen generation solutions, and driving commercialization initiatives from early engagement through to pilot, demonstration, and commercial-scale contracts.

This position is highly outward-facing and engages across the hydrogen ecosystem, including transportation, ammonia, steel, e-fuels, and chemicals. The Director, Business Development, works cross-functionally with Engineering, R&D, Operations, Marketing, Finance, and Investor Relations to evaluate opportunities, shape value propositions, and bring complex technical solutions to market.

Key Responsibilities

Commercial Growth Strategy & Market Development

  • Develop and execute commercial growth plans for new market opportunities, targeting pilot, demonstration, and commercial-scale projects
  • Monitor and assess target markets, identify new opportunities, analyze market trends, and develop market-entry strategies
  • Build market-specific product presentations, use cases, and business cases to support product launch initiatives
  • Conduct market assessments, including total addressable market (TAM), market segmentation, and competitive analysis

Customer Acquisition & Relationship Management

  • Engage with strategic customers through meetings, presentations, proposals, development agreements, and commercial negotiations.
  • Establish and maintain long-term customer relationships and a strong network in key hydrogen and industrial sectors
  • Formulate and communicate clear value propositions aligned to customer needs, cost drivers, and competitive positioning
  • Represent Next Hydrogen at conferences, seminars, and industry events to build brand presence and identify new leads

Strategic Partnerships, Grants & Ecosystem Engagement

  • Secure strategic partners, grants, MOUs, and collaboration agreements that support the product roadmap and commercialization plans
  • Liaise with government agencies and industry groups to advance business development opportunities
  • Support the evaluation of strategic partnerships and joint initiatives as part of the commercial roadmap

Technical & Commercial Project Evaluation

  • Evaluate technical, operational, regulatory, and logistical aspects of potential projects
  • Liaise with internal engineers, R&D, operations, and external experts to assess feasibility and develop robust proposals
  • Provide commercial input into stage-gate reviews for new technology and product development

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Collaborate with marketing, engineering, operations, investor relations, and finance to deliver best-in-class customer experiences
  • Support the development of product launch plans, commercial readiness activities, and product positioning
  • Work closely with the CCO to align business development priorities with corporate strategy

CRM, Pipeline & Reporting

  • Manage the sales pipeline using CRM (e.g., Hubspot), ensuring accurate tracking, forecasting, and reporting
  • Prepare commercial reports, opportunity analyses, and insights for senior leadership
  • Maintain disciplined pipeline hygiene and clear opportunity qualification

Compliance & Safety

  • Ensure adherence to ISO 9001:2015 quality standards in all sales and marketing processes.
  • Support compliance with ISO 45001:2018 by following all safety rules and representing the organization safely when travelling or participating in external engagements.

Qualifications Education

  • Bachelor’s degree (BA/BASc) in Engineering, Science, or a related technical discipline (required).
  • MBA or formal business training is an asset.
  • Additional certifications in sales leadership, marketing, or business development are considered an asset.

Experience

  • 5–10 years of experience in business development and sales of large-scale technical equipment or solutions.
  • Experience in hydrogen, renewable energy, industrial equipment, transportation, or adjacent sectors strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in project development, commercialization of industrial products, and complex technical sales cycles.
  • Proven ability to understand customer requirements, develop tailored solutions, and lead proposal development and contract negotiations.
  • Experience with hydrogen markets, renewable energy projects, or total cost of ownership (TCO) modelling is an asset.

Skills & Attributes

  • Strong consultative selling skills with the ability to quickly understand customer needs and challenges.
  • High level of technical and commercial acumen, with the ability to evaluate project feasibility and risk.
  • Proficiency with CRM systems, sales pipeline management, and proposal development.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and relationship-building skills.
  • Strategic thinker with strong business judgment and an entrepreneurial mindset.
  • Highly collaborative, adaptable, and comfortable operating in fast-paced, evolving environments.

Additional Requirements

  • Fluency in English required; additional language proficiency is an asset.
  • Ability to travel approximately 25% or more, including site visits, conferences, and customer meetings.
  • Ability to work safely and comply with PPE and site safety requirements during site visits.
