-Recruitment range: $106,897 - $133,623 maximum starting salaryis determined through knowledge, experience and internal equity. -Performance range: $153,666salary range ceiling is available through annual performance increases.

Job Summary

University Systems (http://www.uvic.ca/systems/) serves a diverse client base including students, faculty and world-renowned researchers in support of the university's learning, teaching, research and administrative activities. We support the University’s public-facing web services, high profile research projects like the Digital Research Alliance of Canada and ATLAS, administrative systems such as Banner, FAST and Brightspace and work as part of the BCNET consortium. We exist in a complex work environment where we must effectively navigate complex, cutting edge and ever-changing technology, and information security and privacy issues in order to be the best information systems organization in the Canadian university system.

Mandate/Core Purpose of the Role: This Associate Director Digital Services and Project Delivery is responsible for the project management of Enterprise Software and Applications, AI initiatives, and process automation – personnel, facilities, knowledge, and equipment – in support of the teaching, learning, research, and administration activities of the University.

As a member of the UVic Online leadership team this position plays a key role in the development and implementation of department operational and strategic plans and policy. The Associate Director informs the leadership team’s activities by providing enterprise digital service strategy and project management expertise.

The users of enterprise software and applications at UVic have widely varied requirements; from those who use computing facilities as tools incidental to their teaching, learning, research, and administrative tasks, to those for whom computing is central to the gathering and analysis of data, to those for whom research in computing is the primary focus of their work. Some requirements are met at the institutional level while others require localized facilities and support. Many stakeholders also require access to resources further afield including access to cloud computing, remote databases, collaborative environments, etc. The university is committed to providing integrated solutions to these diverse computing needs while ensuring privacy and security of data.

Objectives: formulating best practices; implementing and maintaining services; and advising on policies and projects related to enterprise software systems and the support of technology at UVic. The Associate Director works closely with the Associate Directors of Cloud and Enterprise Systems, Data Centre Services, and Network Services in the delivery of enterprise software systems and applications to the university community.

This position also serves as a lead on IT Governance projects and advises organizationally on enterprise software systems and applications.

Additional responsibilities include managing the Systems Project Management Office; providing technical expertise and support for all areas of University Systems; ensuring that changes to services provided by University Systems to not adversely impact the university as a participant on the University Systems Change Advisory Board; and regularly communicating with the University community through written memos, online bulletins, and social media channels.
Enterprise software systems and applications are expected to be operational 24/7.

Job Requirements

This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline such as computer science or engineering, 9 years of experience managing projects related to developing software and providing technical expertise and client support, including at least 5 years of supervisory or 3 years of management experience.

In-depth, detailed knowledge of numerous complex technical areas related to information technology, information security, and enterprise systems best practices is required. Regularly updating technical competencies through continuous learning is required.
The following criteria are considered an asset:
Experience working in a unionized post-secondary or comparable size/complex organization ITIL, SANS, PMP, and other relevant technical certifications.

Unusual working conditions: Changes or upgrades to major systems result in a period of increased mental stress which is a result of 1) the technical complexities of the change, 2) managing and mentoring staff members through the change, and 3) managing client expectations and stress levels when the systems they rely upon are unavailable or not functioning as intended.
These types of changes or updates are unpredictable, and sometimes unplanned due to hardware or software failure, but usually occur 2-3 times per year and usually last 5-10 hours.
