Our Corporate Head Office is seeking a hands-on Assistant Controller to join our accounting team. This role works closely with the Eastern Regional Controller to manage and coordinate the financial administration of our divisions and operations across eastern Canada.

The Assistant Controller will be directly involved in day-to-day accounting activities while ensuring the timely preparation of monthly financial statements, reconciliations, analysis, and budgeting processes. In addition to supervising a team of 5–7 finance staff, this role will play a key part in supporting system updates, process improvements, and guiding the team through ongoing organizational and operational change. Success in this role requires patience, strong leadership, and the ability to balance working-level responsibilities with team development and change management.

Position Description

  • Provide hands-on leadership in managing and coordinating the overall financial administration of assigned division(s).
  • Work with Operational Leaders in the field, supporting a hands-on approach with the finance team to visit sites, understand the business and support a business partnership between departments.
  • Prepare and submit monthly financial statements with full analysis and commentary to Senior Staff and the Corporate Accounting Department.
  • Conduct detailed variance analysis on income and expenses to support monthly reporting.
  • Maintain accurate accounting records within Business Central.
  • Create and maintain production and statistical databases/Excel reports.
  • Support the Regional Controller with the annual audit, budget preparation, and forecasting.
  • Perform and oversee month-end close activities, including reconciliation of balance sheet and intercompany accounts.
  • Prepare municipal invoices and revenue share schedules.
  • Complete daily and monthly bank reporting.
  • Provide financial support and guidance to Operations Managers to help improve profitability.
  • Prepare HST filings and Stats Canada reports.
  • Assign tasks to ensure effective workflow and operational efficiency.
  • Provide day-to-day guidance to staff, establishing clear goals and expectations.
  • Evaluate staff performance and complete performance reviews.
  • Monitor staff productivity and provide constructive feedback, coaching, and support.
  • Address staff concerns, resolve issues, and foster a positive team culture.
  • Provide training and onboarding support to new and existing staff.
  • Oversee timely vendor invoice processing and manage/oversee customer collections.
  • Maintain strong working relationships with staff, vendors, clients, and municipal contacts.
  • Lead or assist with ad hoc reporting and special projects.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned, including those related to system improvements and process optimization.

  • Demonstrate patience, consistency, and clear communication as the team adapts to new processes and expectations.
  • Serve as a working leader who models adaptability and encourages a culture of continuous improvement.

Skills & Qualifications

  • CPA designation or in the final year of CPA studies is required for this role.
  • Minimum 5-7 years of experience in a fast-paced, deadline-driven, multi line of business accounting environment.
  • 3-5 years in a leadership role overseeing a team of finance professionals.
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to meet tight deadlines.
  • Experience overseeing daily accounting activities and monitoring outcomes.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and strong skills with MS Office Suite.
  • Strong experience using accounting software (Business Central, RTA Fleet Management Software, Navusoft, or Materials Manager are assets).
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills in a high-volume environment.
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to collaborate with staff at all organizational levels.
  • Strong ability to coach, motivate, and develop staff through ongoing change.

Salary - $85,000 - $97,000

Onsite – Oakville with expectations to visit sites and key stakeholders
