About the role

Description: Responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy construction equipment such as bulldozers, excavators, cranes, graders, loaders, and dump trucks. This includes working on engines, transmissions, hydraulic and electrical systems, and drivetrains, as well as performing scheduled maintenance and using computerized diagnostic tools to isolate faults. As Lead Hand, the successful candidate will also oversee the daily workflow of the shop’s mechanics — assigning and prioritizing work, providing hands-on diagnostic guidance, mentoring apprentices and junior mechanics, and ensuring repairs are completed safely, correctly, and on schedule. This is a working leadership role for someone with a deep command of heavy equipment diagnostics who can take charge of a situation, make sound decisions under pressure, and lead by example on the shop floor. The role requires a 310T or 421A certification, a valid class G license, and the ability to work safely and independently in a fast-paced construction environment.

Main Duties:Diagnosis and repair — Inspecting, troubleshooting, and repairing machinery such as bulldozers, excavators, cranes, graders, loaders, and dump trucks. This covers engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and drivetrain s.Component overhaul — Rebuilding or replacing major assemblies like engines, transmissions, differentials, final drives, and turbocharger s.Perform scheduled maintenance services such as oil change s.Road test motor vehicles and test automotive systems and components using computerized diagnostic and other testing devices to diagnose and isolate fault s.Other duties as assigne d.Lead Hand Duties:Team leadership — Direct and coordinate the daily activities of the shop’s heavy duty mechanics, assigning and prioritizing work orders to keep equipment downtime to a minimu m.Diagnostic leadership — Serve as the shop’s senior technical resource, guiding mechanics through complex electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical diagnostics and stepping in on the most difficult troubleshooting case s.Mentoring and development — Coach, train, and mentor apprentices and journeyperson mechanics, sharing diagnostic techniques and building the overall skill level of the tea m.Quality control — Inspect and verify completed repairs and maintenance to ensure work meets company and manufacturer standards before equipment is returned to servic e.Taking charge — Act as the point person during equipment breakdowns, urgent repairs, and shifting priorities; make clear decisions, communicate the plan, and see it throug h.Safety leadership — Model and enforce all Workplace Safety policies and safe work practices, addressing unsafe conditions or behaviours immediatel y.Coordination — Communicate with the Shop Foreman, parts department, and field operations on repair status, parts requirements, and equipment availabilit
