Job Summary

The Manager, Scholarly Integrity, is responsible for overseeing and administering the University's Scholarly Integrity Policy (SC6), ensuring adherence to the highest standards of ethical research practices. This position plays a critical role in managing complaints related to the responsible conduct of research, providing expert advice during the initial inquiry phase, and coordinating investigations when necessary. Acting as a liaison with the Tri-Agency Secretariat, legal counsel, and other external and internal stakeholders, the Manager ensures the University's compliance with national and institutional scholarly integrity standards.

In addition to handling complaints, the Manager proactively supports the development and improvement of the University's scholarly integrity practices. This includes creating and delivering training and educational materials, overseeing the scholarly integrity website, and advising on policy updates to address emerging challenges in research ethics. The role demands a deep understanding of research administration, the ability to manage sensitive situations with discretion, and a commitment to fostering a culture of integrity across the institution.

Organizational Status

This role reports to the Assistant Vice-President, Research and serves as a key advisor on matters related to scholarly integrity, working closely with senior administrators, researchers, and other stakeholders across the institution. This role requires frequent interaction with faculty, administrative staff, and external stakeholders, including legal counsel and national research agencies.

Work Performed

  • Manages the University's Scholarly Integrity Policy (SC6) and ensures compliance with its provisions.
  • Ensures all processes related to scholarly integrity complaints and investigations adhere to principles of procedural fairness and confidentiality.
  • Handles incoming complaints under SC6 and advises on the initial inquiry phase of complaints.
  • Identifies and advises on potential or actual conflicts of interest within the scholarly misconduct investigation process, in accordance with institutional and external guidelines.
  • Drafts correspondence to respondents and complainants regarding scholarly integrity matters.
  • Liaises with the Tri-Agency Secretariat on matters related to the responsible conduct of research.
  • Establishes and manages committees for investigations when required.
  • Liaises with external counsel to initiate and monitor the progress and outcome of investigations.
  • Collaborates with other University portfolios when complaints intersect multiple areas of responsibility.
  • Provides recommendations and advice on improvements to scholarly integrity practices and policy development.
  • Develops and delivers targeted training for faculty, staff, and students on maintaining rigorous scholarly standards as outlined in the SC6 Policy.
  • Provides advice on the development and maintenance of the scholarly integrity website to provide accurate and accessible information.
  • Other duties as required.

Consequence of Error/Judgment

The Manager, Scholarly Integrity, plays a crucial role in preserving the University’s reputation for ethical research practices. Errors in judgment, such as mishandling complaints, breaching confidentiality, or failing to ensure procedural fairness, could result in significant reputational harm, legal challenges, and loss of funding. Such errors could disrupt research activities, damage trust within the academic community, and cause undue harm to individuals involved. To mitigate these risks, the Manager must exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and adhere to principles of fairness and compliance with institutional and legal standards.

Supervision Received

This position reports to the Assistant Vice-President, Research and works independently under general direction.

Supervision Given

May provide functional direction to researchers and guidance to committee members, administrative staff, and other members of the University community involved in scholarly integrity matters.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline is required with a minimum of seven years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own
  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree strongly preferred, preferably a PhD.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of research ethics and policies governing scholarly conduct.
  • Commitment to fostering a culture of scholarly integrity and ethical accountability within the academic community.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Tri-Agency Framework: Responsible Conduct of Research and other applicable regulatory standards
  • Experience conducting or managing investigations related to ethical standards or regulatory compliance.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to draft professional correspondence.
  • Proven ability to manage sensitive situations with discretion and professionalism.
  • Experience liaising with national research agencies and external legal counsel.
  • Experience developing educational materials and conducting training sessions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across diverse teams and portfolios.
  • Demonstrated ability to build, manage and maintain high-quality and productive relationships across cultural difference.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and interact with empathy, understanding and respect of diverse and divergent perspectives and behaviours.
  • Works in a collaborative and inclusive manner, fostering equitable experiences and a respectful environment for all staff.
  • Acknowledges, reflects upon and challenges one’s own biases and assumptions.
