Duties and Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Executive Director of Economic Development, the position will be responsible for:

  • assisting in the coordination and implementation of the Windsor Works Economic Development Strategy.

  • cooperating with Invest WindsorEssex, the position will focus on business retention and expansion with efforts geared to the facilitation of job creation and economic diversification;

  • assisting in existing and potential members of the business community with information related to municipal approvals, development applications and economic incentives;

  • assisting in championing an environment that promotes a high level of customer service and speed in delivery to the business community that cuts through perceived bureaucracy and “red tape”;

  • assisting in maintaining relationships, client information and reporting data to City Council;

  • focusing on business retention and expansion while maintaining regional cooperation, and undertake these efforts with emphasis in downtown neighbourhoods;

  • supporting economic development activities around the Windsor Airport lands relating in particular to Investment attraction files and other areas as assigned;

  • supporting the executive director and a multi-stakeholder table to coordinate economic development investments in activities deemed worthwhile by council;

  • researching and prepare reports with recommendations on assigned initiatives to Committees of Council and City Council;

  • researching and prepare written comments on issues that are generally shared by local businesses including, but not limited to, Business Improvement Areas;

  • researching and assist existing and potential members of the business community to access Community Improvement Plans, special studies and programs related to economic development;

  • reviewing and provide recommendations on policy initiatives proposed by senior levels of government as they relate to economic development;

  • providing input into and help develop business expansion, retention and attraction strategies and municipal economic incentive programs;

  • acting as a representative of the economic development department and the municipality on various committees or meetings related to economic development;

  • acting as a point of contact for public agencies, business improvement area boards and their membership, community/neighbourhood associations, the general public and internal service units of the Corporation with regard to the key responsibilities of the economic development portfolio;

  • assisting with the coordination of public meetings;

  • meeting with development proponents and advisors of other agencies;

  • performing Occupational Health and Safety duties as outlined in the Corporation’s Health & Safety Program.

  • Performing other related duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Must have a Master’s Degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Marketing, English, Communications, Planning or related field, or Ontario Ministry of Education equivalency, and a minimum of two (2) years experience in economic development, marketing, business, planning or related field ;
  • OR Must have a University Degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Marketing, English, Communications, Planning or related field, or Ontario Ministry of Education equivalency, and a minimum of four (4) years experience in economic development, marketing, business, planning or related field ;
  • OR Must have a Post-Secondary College Diploma in Business Administration, Public Administration, Marketing, English, Communications, Planning or related field, or Ontario Ministry of Education equivalency, and a minimum of six (6) years experience in economic development, marketing, business, planning or related field ;
  • Must have the ability to travel to off-site locations in a timely and expedient manner as required. If method of travel is by vehicle, a current, valid and lawful Driver’s License will be required in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act and must provide a driver’s abstract as a condition of employment;
  • Must have knowledge of the Ontario Municipal Act and related legislation and provincial policies;
  • Must have excellent verbal, written, and visual communication skills; ability to make oral presentations; ability to develop and use graphic aids;
  • Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft suite of products and graphic software;
  • Must have excellent organizational and interpersonal skills;
  • Must have the ability to solve problems and meet deadlines under pressure;
  • Should have knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Acts, its regulations and knowledge of the hazards associated with work;

Physical Demands:

Given that this job is a new position a Physical Demands analysis will be completed with the incumbent after approximately six months of occupying the position.
