EPCOR Water Services is excited to announce an opportunity for a full-time, permanent Control Systems Engineer to join our Customer Operations team. This role is based at our Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant in Edmonton.

 

As a Control Systems Engineer, you’ll play a key role in the design and implementation of control systems that keep our operations running smoothly. Your responsibilities will include:

 

  • Estimation and design of control systems
  • Conducting design reviews and procurement
  • Coordinating projects to ensure successful outcomes

 

You’ll work on projects with timelines ranging from 3 to 12 months, making a real impact on the reliability and efficiency of our systems.

What You’ll Be Responsible For

 

As a Control Systems Engineer, reporting to the Manager, Instrument and Control, CAE, you will:

  • Provide Strategic Input
    • Contribute to control plans and directions, ensuring alignment with EPCOR Water Services (EWS) and Control Systems strategy.
    • Foster strong relationships within the Controls and Automation Engineering (CAE) team and across EWS.
  • Plan and Deliver Projects
    • Develop and implement deliverables within 3–12 month timelines aligned with the CAE business plan.
    • Identify and manage budget requirements for control systems projects.
    • Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and meet customer requirements.
  • Engineering and Technical Expertise
    • Provide engineering and technical services for process control systems in compliance with internal and external standards.
    • Design and implement new control systems, including:
      • Project and equipment specifications
      • Procurement
      • System programming design
      • Engineering drawings and control narratives
      • Alarm strategy development
      • Testing and commissioning
  • Compliance and Risk Management
    • Develop and review control system processes to ensure compliance with policies, standards, and regulatory requirements.
    • Support process safety programs such as PHAs, PSSRs, MOC, and commissioning activities for safe integration of new and modified systems.
  • Promote Safety
    • Champion a zero-injury culture through hazard assessments, safe-work plans, worksite inspections, PPE compliance, and reporting near-misses.
  • Drive Innovation
    • Present process control solutions at Management of Change committee meetings.
    • Support initiatives in Advanced Control, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Machine Learning (ML) to enhance operational efficiency and innovation.

 

What’s Required to Be Successful

 

We’re looking for a professional who brings a blend of technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and a passion for innovation. To thrive in this role, you should have:

 

  • Education & Certification
    • An Engineering degree in Electrical, Computer, or Chemical disciplines from a recognized institution.
    • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or equivalent from an accredited authority.
  • Experience
    • 7–10 years of progressive engineering experience with a strong focus on technical execution and project delivery.
    • Proven ability to plan, develop, and execute complex engineering projects from concept to completion.
  • Technical Skills
    • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or C++ for engineering solutions.
    • Strong understanding of control system architecture, components, and configuration methodologies.
    • Experience creating and maintaining control system schematics using AutoCAD.
    • Skilled in drafting clear, accurate technical documentation for engineering deliverables.
    • Ability to review and authenticate technical drawings and work products in compliance with APEGA standards.
    • Familiarity with Power BI for designing dashboards and generating reports.
    • Solid knowledge of relational databases and process historians for data acquisition and analysis.

  • This is a full-time, professional-level position, working 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday.
