SUMMARY:
In collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team, the Occupational Health Nurse will assume responsibility for the delivery of Occupational Health Services and programs to promote employee health, safety, and wellness in the workplace. The Occupational Health Nurse employs best practice disability management principles to facilitate stay-at-work and/or early-and-safe return to work following worker’s injuries and/or illnesses. Additionally, the Occupational Health Nurse will assume responsibility for the delivery of Occupational Health Services, such as, baseline health assessments and health surveillance in accordance with legislated communicable disease surveillance protocols, administer immunization programs, and assist with exposure/outbreak control and management.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide early intervention along with accommodated work plans including coordinating medical treatment to effectively manage lost time and absenteeism. Assesses client and organizational needs to coordinate and manage both works related and non-work-related illnesses and injuries cases in accordance with WSIA and Human Rights legislation and facilitate an early and safe return to work. Monitors and manages WSIB claims and implements the modified work program to enable employees to return to baseline health.
- Conducts accident and incident follow up with employes to determine incident mitigation strategies/safe work practices and provides first aid as required to ensure staff health and wellbeing. Compiles employee data related to sick leave and collaborate with Human Resources in the management of sick leave programs to reduce absenteeism and determine suitable accommodations to enable attendance at work. Perform and implement return-to-work programs post injury/illness to enable staff to stay at work ensuring their fitness to work.
- Perform Initial Health assessments of new employees to ensure fitness to work and determine any accommodation requirements. Provides immunization as required by legislated communicable disease surveillance protocols and programs to ensure safe work environment for staff and patients.
- Coordinate health surveillance programs to manage hazards providing a safe work environment for staff. Lead exposure/outbreak management to provide safe work environment for staff and patients.

REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing
- 2 years’ experience in an Occupational Health setting.
- A current Canadian Nurses Association specialty certification in Occupational Health or a commitment to obtaining a certification within 3 years of beginning employment
- Current license or registration as a Registered Nurse in Ontario
- Knowledge of Parklane, Hospital Electronic Health Record
- Knowledge of disability management principles and practices, medical surveillance principles, adult education, presentation skills, computers, immunology, epidemiology and statistical analysis.
PREFERRED:
- 2 years active clinical experience in an acute care setting and 2 years’ experience in a Occupational Health setting.
- Disability Management Certification (CDMP, CRTWC)
- Experience in training and education of workers regarding job safety.
- Experience working in a unionized environment.
