Under the leadership of the Chief Investment Officer, the Total Portfolio Management Group (TPM) is a relatively new team that covers trading, portfolio analytics, portfolio strategy and portfolio construction. The Portfolio Construction group provides a holistic lens across the OMERS investment portfolio, with responsibility for capital allocation and asset allocation guidance. The Portfolio Construction group works closely with the broader investment teams and partners to integrate best-in-class thinking on portfolio construction and support the continued evolution of the investment strategy.

As a key member of the group, the Analyst, Portfolio Construction will make significant contributions to the capabilities and implementation of TPM’s capital allocation recommendations. This candidate will improve TPM’s tool set, perform analysis and conduct research to guide top down allocation across portfolio asset class, FX, geography, investment strategy and risk factor exposures. He/she will support the development of a top-down portfolio construction and asset allocation framework that fosters the achievement of overall portfolio investment return and risk targets.

The right person for this role demonstrates a combination of quantitative, qualitative research and communication skills, practical experience and sound judgment.

As a member of this team, you will be responsible for:

  • Employing data methods, visualization and analytics to further understanding of OMERS overall portfolio characteristics and improve TPM’s tool set
  • Connecting with different investment teams to better understand OMERS total plan exposure and generate better insights on the balance sheet
  • Be involved in helping recommend OMERS Strategic capital allocation guidance through a combination of quantitative modeling, analysis and qualitative research
  • Conducting research regarding different economic, market or investment trends towards the goal of tangible portfolio construction recommendations
  • Providing contributions to the design and implementation of TPM Asset Class and Scenario Analysis framework, definitions, and modeling
  • Synthesizing analysis and views into clear, concise messages that can be shared with stakeholders throughout OMERS
  • Fostering relationships with investment teams and business partners to support the overall evolution of the TPM Portfolio Construction capabilities
  • Engaging with cross-OMERS personnel to increase TPM’s knowledge of investment strategies and portfolios
  • Collaborating, sharing information and insights across investment teams to deliver the best outcomes for the pension plan

To Succeed In This Role, You Bring

  • 1+ years of industry experience gained in top down portfolio construction/portfolio management/capital markets/strategy preferably at a Pension Fund, Insurance company or Asset Management firm.
  • Keen interest in public market investing and capital allocation experience
  • Some exposure to different physical and synthetic investment products such as ETFs, options, futures etc. would be preferred
  • Familiarity with different strategic portfolio optimization approaches and rebalancing would be preferred
  • An academic background in Math, Statistics, Finance, Engineering, Computer Science or related field.
  • Strong analytical, quantitative, research and financial modeling skills with the ability to generate insights and think holistically at a portfolio level
  • Strong ability to communicate potentially complex ideas and results simply and effectively, to a diverse range of stakeholders
  • A high attention to detail that complements your ability to see the big picture
  • A collaborative mindset and strong relationship management skills
  • The ability to prioritize competing tasks while delivering high-quality products within deadlines
