Role Overview We are seeking an experienced Database Administrator (DBA) to design, implement, and manage enterprise-scale database environments. This role focuses on optimizing data pipelines, ensuring high availability, and supporting modern cloud-based data platforms. The ideal candidate will bring strong expertise in database design, cloud services, performance tuning, and operational excellence within regulated environments.
Key Responsibilities Design and develop data pipelines from source systems to end users Optimize data pipelines for performance, scalability, and reliability Create physical database designs and manage database management systems (DBMS) Perform database optimization, capacity planning, installation, migration, and performance tuning Manage backup and recovery processes Monitor and enforce database rules and governance standards Participate in incident, change, and configuration management processes Support high availability (HA) and disaster recovery (DR) strategies Manage cloud data services including storage, VMs, Data Lake, Data Warehouse, and Lakehouse platforms Ensure compliance with data security, encryption, and regulatory requirements Provide guidance and mentorship as a senior technical resource
Core Skills & Experience 7–10+ years of experience in database administration (design, implementation, operations, optimization) Strong expertise in cloud database platforms, especially Azure PaaS and IaaS Experience designing logical and physical database models for OLTP and analytical workloads Hands-on experience with database installation, configuration, migration, and modernization Experience in performance tuning, capacity planning, and lifecycle management Proven experience supporting structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data environments Strong background in ITIL-aligned incident, change, and configuration management
Technical & Engineering Skills Expertise in: Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, SQL Server on Azure VMs Azure Storage, Azure Data Lake, Azure Data Factory, Databricks Lakehouse Advanced performance tuning: Query optimization, indexing strategies Query Store analysis, wait statistics, IO analysis TempDB optimization and throttling mitigation Experience with: Data modeling, partitioning, and multi-tenant architectures Cloud networking (VNETs, firewalls, private endpoints) Authentication/authorization (Azure AD, RBAC) Encryption (TDE), key management, and data protection Knowledge of compliance frameworks and data governance standards
General Skills Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines Strong collaboration skills within cross-functional teams Experience working in regulated or governed environments
Desirable Skills Experience with distributed data systems and middleware Knowledge of cybersecurity vulnerability remediation Familiarity with CASE tools and enterprise architecture practices Awareness of emerging IT trends and technologies
Public Sector Experience Experience working in regulated environments with formal governance models Familiarity with Ontario Public Service standards and compliance frameworks Knowledge of data privacy regulations such as PHIPPA
Must-Have Requirements 7–10+ years of DBA experience Strong Azure cloud database expertise Experience managing enterprise cloud data platforms Advanced performance tuning and troubleshooting skills Expertise with Azure SQL and SQL Server environments
