Job Description:

We are hiring a Lead Landscape Technician / Equipment Operator to execute and complete straightforward residential and commercial projects in Greater Victoria.

This is a dynamic, hands-on role, combining equipment operation with landscape construction. You’ll operate mini excavators, lead a small crew (1–2 members), and contribute directly to building hardscape and softscape features. The variety keeps the work interesting and rewarding, with both leadership and hands-on opportunities every day.

Responsibilities:

  • Operate mini excavator for site prep, excavation, drainage, and backfilling

  • Lead or assist with hardscape (patios, pavers, driveways) and softscape (trees, shrubs, sod, mulch) installations

  • Use skid steer and other landscape equipment as needed

  • Perform trenching and assist with perimeter drainage and pipe/ Irrigation installation

  • Lead a small crew to complete jobs safely and efficiently

  • Perform hands-on labour (lifting, digging, raking, tamping, paver prep/installation)

  • Read grades, slopes, and assist with site layout.

  • Maintain equipment and follow all safety procedures

Qualifications:

  • 2–3 years of proven experience operating mini-excavators.

  • Confident operating independently in narrow and tight spaces.

  • Ability and willingness to perform daily physical, hands-on labour

  • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.

  • Experience leading small crews

  • Knowledge of drainage, grading, and site prep

  • Experience operating skid steers, Walk behinds and other construction/landscape tools (asset)

  • Civil experience (laser levels, measurements, backfilling, safety) is an asset

  • Ground Disturbance certification (asset)

  • Strong work ethic and reliability

  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License

Compensation

$30-$35 per hour depending on skills and experience.

Schedule:

  • Regular: Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM -*Seasonal Hours (May to September 2026):*Monday to Thursday, 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM

**Work Location:**Different Greater Victoria work sites.

Garden City Tree & Landscape Ltd was founded by Chris Stansfield approximately 15 yrs ago. The company has grown to 35 full time staff that includes office administration, Human Resource Technician, Risk manager, Estimator and managers of each of its divisions (Arbor, Maintenance, Install, Irrigation, Equipment). Chris Stansfield is President and co owner. Colin Eaton is Vice President and co owner. The two owners have known each other since their early teens and have developed a respectful working relationship.
