GIS Analyst
Full-Time, Permanent Cranbrook BC

The GIS Analyst will support the Lands and Resources Sector through coordination and delivery of geospatial support services. This would include maintaining an up-to-date database that details Ktunaxa’s cultural and ecological values across ʔamakʔis Ktunaxa as well as the impacts and resource uses that threaten these values. You have a deep understanding of data and the possibilities and limitations of that it provides in the GIS. Your understanding of cultural and ecological spatial data will allow you to undertake analytical queries with tabular and visual results that will support projects and decision making.
The GIS Analyst will support a variety of work across all facets of land and resource stewardship, including strategic land stewardship planning, referrals management, aquatic stewardship, archaeology, environmental assessments and supporting ʔa·knusti (Ktunaxa Guardians). Along with providing GIS support to a team of multidisciplinary professionals and subject matter experts, you are also knowledgeable on the topic of data sovereignty, data governance and will collaborate on work related to this.
You are skilled in the advanced use of GIS software and tools such as ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Enterprise, Survey 123, Field Maps and Story Maps. A high degree of organization is imperative as you will be responsible for database management and managing the demands of multiple ongoing projects and an active referrals environment. You are familiar with advanced data analysis and querying spatial databases to provide insight into land and resource stewardship options. Field data collection is not the focus of this role, but you will have a strong understanding of data collection methods, analytical tools and will support field data collection, data management and representation on the GIS.
The GIS Analyst will be an effective communicator who can bridge between a multidisciplinary staff, scientists, citizens, Elders. The GIS Analyst will also be expected to onboard, orientate, train and mentor entry level GIS staff as required.
This is a full-time permanent position with full benefits.
Key Responsibilities:

Lead the management of a GIS that can deliver analytical and mapping support to Lands and Resources Sector and Ktunaxa First Nations as directed. This can require complex and extensive data management, data integration, data analysis (may require coding knowledge), and project management.

Design and implement services that contribute to strategic lands and resource stewardship plans. Support lands and resources referral responses with tools that analyze cultural, ecological and socioeconomic opportunities and impacts of land and resources-based activities and values.

Understand the data within datasets, limitations and opportunities, identify where data gaps exist and strategize solutions.

Develop GIS related work plans, including GIS staff from the Lands and Resources Sector, other Sectors and other Ktunaxa First Nations.

Support record management system and provide technical support to its user.

Provide technical advice to the Director of Lands and Resources in relation to new technology acquisitions to meet future anticipated needs (hardware/software).

Maintain the following hardware:

ArcGIS license server
-
Plotter
-
GIS Workstation
-
Tablets and other devices used for GIS apps, data collection and integration

Coordinate IT related interfaces, as directed by Manager/Director of Lands & Resources

Backup GIS and record management data.

GIS Technical Diploma and other education in natural resource stewardship (Bachelor's degree, Master's preferred), or advanced degree in GIS with a natural resource stewardship/management focus.

7 years minimum work-related experience using ArcGIS technologies.

Programming experience using Python, SQL

System administration (server admin, server capacity management)
