**Job Description:**Housekeeping Attendant (Casual/Part-Time)

**Location:**Island Health (VIHA) – Nanaimo, BC

**Shift Requirements:**Weekends (Required) + On-call availability for sick-call coverage

Position Summary

The Housekeeping Attendant is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and sterile environment within the healthcare facility. This role is critical in preventing the spread of infections and ensuring the comfort of patients, staff, and visitors. The successful candidate must be highly reliable, detail-oriented, and capable of responding to short-notice coverage requests.

Key Responsibilities

• Sanitization & Disinfection: Perform high-level cleaning and disinfection of patient rooms, common areas, clinical spaces, and washrooms according to established healthcare protocols.
• Waste Management: Safe handling and disposal of general waste, recycling, and biomedical/hazardous waste (including sharps containers) following provincial safety standards.
• Floor Care: Dust mopping, damp mopping, and utilizing specialized equipment for floor maintenance in high-traffic corridors and patient zones.
• Infection Control: Strict adherence to Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements and specialized cleaning procedures for various isolation precautions (e.g., Contact, Droplet).
• Rapid Response: Respond promptly to "Code Brown" (hazardous spills) or urgent cleaning requests to ensure facility safety.
• Stock Management: Monitor and replenish supplies such as hand sanitizer, soap, paper towels, and toilet tissue.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Experience: Previous experience in healthcare cleaning or industrial housekeeping is preferred.
• Physical Ability: Must be able to stand/walk for extended periods, perform repetitive lifting (up to 25 lbs), and navigate stairs or elevators frequently.
• Communication: Strong verbal and written English skills to follow complex safety instructions and interact professionally with clinical staff.
• Availability: Mandatory weekend availability. Must be reachable and willing to cover weekday sick calls on short notice.
