About the role
The Care Aide Learner (CAL) is an employed learner enrolled in, or conditionally accepted to, a recognized Health Care Aide education program and working toward eligibility for regulated Health Care Aide practice. The role is intentionally developmental and time limited, emphasizing safe practice, escalation, and continuous learning rather than independent clinical judgment. Through supervised practice, feedback, and formal education, CALs build the knowledge, skills, and professional behaviours required to transition to full scope Health Care Aide practice. Supervision is adjusted according to care setting, client1 needs, task complexity, and the learner¿s demonstrated competence. CALs may perform only those tasks within their knowledge, competencies, and role limitations and are responsible for clearly communicating these boundaries to mentors, buddies, and others assigning tasks. They are also expected to intentionally live Covenant¿s Values in day to day practice, reflected in their decision making, interactions, teamwork, and overall approach to care. Care Aide Learners provide direct personal care and support services under the direction and supervision of regulated health professionals, within an authorized learner scope aligned with care plans, organizational policies, and defined learning objectives. They contribute to care delivery by assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs), supporting mobility and meal routines, and promoting client comfort, dignity, and safety. CALs apply foundational skills in observation, monitoring, documentation, and reporting, promptly communicating changes in client condition or concerns to supervising staff.
