Job Description: VP, Health Strategy and Enablement Sun Life Health is a business in Sun Life Canada focused on empowering Clients to live their healthiest lives no matter where they are in their health journey. Sun Life Health is a critical strategic priority for Sun Life as we shift to broadening our focus on health around delivering health journeys to clients and all Canadians across Canada. Role Summary Reporting to the Senior Vice-President, Sun Life Health, the Vice-President, Health Strategy and Enablement role has the mandate to establish business strategy and realize outcomes by ensuring end to end execution spanning both our Group Benefits and Health businesses. The leader in this role also has accountability for enablement functions including advanced data analytics, our focus on digital enterprise and value streams, governance of risk and compliance and mergers and acquisitions in the Health space.

  • AVP, Governance and Risk
  • AVP, Strategy, Digital Enterprise and Sponsor Enablement
  • The AVP, Partnership Success and Health products has a dotted line to this role as this role has accountability for M&A transactions

Key Accountabilities Strategy Development, Planning and Governance

  • Accountable for the development and execution of the overall strategy for Sun Life Health and for exploring strategic challenges and opportunities across our business.
  • Ownership of the strategic roadmap (mid to long term) ensuring ongoing achievement of business priorities across Sun Life Health.
  • Leads strategic change management and organization change readiness in partnership with strategy owners across Sun Life Canada.
  • Identifies partnership opportunities and executes on M & A as we continue to expand the business into adjacent health solutions.
  • Ownership of the annual process to identify Health OKRs that support alignment with Sun Life Canada and functions within Health.
  • Ownership of ensuring appropriate governance (risk / compliance) across Sun Life Health.
  • Manages overall risk of Sun Life Health data/privacy by understanding the regulatory environment across Canada to ensure we are accounting for and adapting principles and/or processes to ensure compliance.
  • Conducts research against our internal solutions to generate insights relevant to our business objectives; identify new/expand on existing solutions.
  • Thought Leadership to further our Canadian Health.
  • As a member of the Sun Life Health Leadership team, contribute to the overall success of Sun Life Health and represents Sun Life Health on cross BU initiatives as appropriate.

Health Data Strategy and Insights

  • Ownership of the analytics function to design, develop and deliver advanced analytics capabilities, which will accelerate the adoption of self-serve tools and services.
  • Accountable for leadership direction on the design of key analytics, operational reporting and performance metrics to drive revenue generation and insights for business development.
  • Strategic oversight, leadership and coaching to the teams to help set direction in the business plans on where to pivot the execution of our strategy while driving business results and pricing management practices.
  • Accountable for leveraging existing infrastructure from across Canada (roles, data assets) to aggregate the health assets across the Canadian businesses in a format that is usable by an insights team.
  • Accountable for developing approach/processes to layer insights capability onto the data set so that businesses can work with the dataset to generate insights (as a model/archetype).
  • Build out predictive analytics capability for Sun Life Health leveraging internal and external data.
  • Develop and execute strategies to leverage real world data and evidence to generate actionable business insights and thought leadership, for internal and external audiences.

Digital Enterprise and Sponsor and Advisor Journeys

  • Ownership of the Digital Enterprise (DE) function for Sun Life Health.
  • Support Group Benefit’s focus on digital enterprise for Plan Sponsors and Advisors.
  • Oversee development of multi-year client experience roadmaps for sponsors and advisors and maintain a close working relationship with our Client Experience office (CXO) and Digital Client Technology and Solutions (DCTS) to ensure alignment with the GB member journey.
  • Provide leadership for the development and delivery of the Analytics product roadmap for Plan sponsors and Advisors.

Leadership and People Management

  • Provide engaging and collaborative leadership and thought partnership to a team of strategy, advanced analytic, governance, data insights, and journey owner direct reports.
  • Support strong team engagement, loyalty, and well-being.
  • Lead capability development and performance management for the direct report team, engaging laterally where needed, and provide input on staffing, performance, and development issues relative to partner functions (e.g. Technology, Finance, HR) aligned to the business.
  • Adopt a BOLDER mindset to support execution on the mandate and empower direct reports to develop their teams and employees through on-going coaching and feedback.

Key Competencies :

  • Excellent strategic thinker with proven experience in building and implementing complex strategies with accompanying roadmaps & key metrics
  • Ability to understand key business drivers in the financial services industry and the health industry, anticipating change and seeing competitive opportunities in an evolving market.
  • Leveraging both qualitative and quantitative analytic skills to identify strategic gaps and opportunities.
  • Challenge the status quo and exhibit a mindset of creativity, determination, and an energetic drive to succeed.
  • The candidate will have a high EQ and have the ability to proactively deal with difficult issues and effectively avert escalation.
  • Ability to oversee and mobilize multiple projects and excel in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and be comfortable with ambiguity and pivoting from macro to micro issues.
  • Ability to build, lead, motivate and retain high performing teams.
  • The executive presence and maturity to establish credibility externally and throughout Sun Life, demonstrating organizational savvy, political awareness, and agility.
  • An excellent relationship builder who can relate to people at all levels both within Sun Life and externally with equal ease.
  • The ability to communicate effectively and articulate compelling messages that build shared vision and purpose.
  • Excellent coach and mentor with proven success at developing talent as well as driving transformation in ways of thinking and doing business.

Education & Experience :

  • Seasoned executive with 10-15 years of broad experience
  • Experience and understanding in the Group Benefits and Health space are strong assets
  • Experience with digital, data, and analytics as key differentiators driving business value
  • University degree in a related area required. Graduate degree is an asset.
  • As this position is posted in several locations, we specify that bilingualism (French, English, both oral and written) is required for Quebec only for the frequent interactions with English and French-speaking colleagues or internal partners across Canada or worldwide.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
