Commencing : As soon as possible
Permanent : 35 hours per week, 12-month position
Salary : $73,430-$85,905/year
Position Summary:
In support of the strategic priorities of Bluewater District School Board (BWDSB), the Indigenous Advisor will draw upon their education and lived experiences and perspectives to implement centralized training, building and maintaining relationships with community partners, and coordinating and facilitating learning events for students and/or staff. The Indigenous Advisor will work closely with other BWDSB staff, Indigenous students, and families in elementary and secondary schools to identify and support the social, emotional, intellectual, cultural, and physical well-being of students.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide support for student achievement, transitions, and cultural initiatives
- Work with school and system staff, including attendance counsellors and graduation coaches providing guidance to support Indigenous student achievement and well-being
- Liaise between school, home, and community social service agencies
- Provide support to ensure that literacy and numeracy programs reflect an inclusive curriculum, particularly, the perspective of Indigenous peoples
- Provide support in the development of the Board Action Plan on Indigenous Education
- Provide support in collaborative inquiries and staff in-service
- Develop and present professional development related to equity and inclusion
- Assist with planning and monitoring of land-based summer programming for students
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications and Experience

- Secondary School Diploma and Native Education, Counselling Training Program Diploma, or Diploma in Native Education Indigenous Studies, or a related field
- Relevant experience working with Indigenous partners
Assets:
- Demonstrated understanding of strategies that support trauma-informed practices
- Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous history, culture, and traditional practices
- Awareness of current political, cultural, and social awareness of issues impacting Indigenous youth
- Knowledge of community, and social services agencies that serve Indigenous families
- Knowledge of crisis intervention, experience with behaviour management techniques and strategies including knowledge of conflict resolution
- Experience working in the education system and knowledge of Ontario's publicly funded schools
- Ability to prioritize, multi-task and co-ordinate jobs/tasks to meet deadlines and handle frequent concurrent tasks while adapting to changing situations and priorities
- Excellent organizational skills with respect to planning, communication, attention to detail, decision making, motivation and problem solving.
- Excellent relationship building skills, sound judgement, sensitivity, and an inclusive approach to building consensus and solving problems.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
- Aptitude in computer applications and skill in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to work independently and as a team member
Job Requirements:
- Access to a reliable vehicle and willingness to work in all regions of Bluewater District School Board (Bruce and Grey counties)
- Eligible to work in Canada
- Vulnerable sector police records check, satisfactory to the board
