About the 10 North General Internal Medicine Unit We are a 28-bed general internal medicine unit. Benefit from manageable nurse-to-patient ratios: 4 patients per nurse during the day and 5-6 patients at night. Our patients are typically admitted with diverse and complex medical needs, including pneumonia, congestive heart failure, delirium, infection, cancer, and other acute and chronic illnesses.
Our patients are often socially, functionally and medically complex which offers nurses unique opportunities to develop specialized expertise in respiratory medicine, oncology, palliative care, pain management, wound care, and geriatrics. With Canada's aging population, these future-ready skills are highly transferable and valuable throughout the health care system.
Nurses on this team note the supportive leadership structure as one of the key factors in high employee retention on this unit. Our goal is to coach and mentor our nurses and make sure they can continue to develop their skills in an environment that feels safe.
In this role you will:
- Provide direct patient and family centered care for general internal medicine patients
- Complete physical assessments on patients
- Administer medications and provide any necessary care (wound care, IV insertion and management, monitoring drains, prepare patients for procedures, etc.)
- Attend nursing rounds and participate in patient/family meetings
- Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team, including doctors, pharmacists, social workers, clinical nurse specialists, etc.
- Apply a broad range of nursing skills including (but not exclusive to) CADD pumps, nephrostomy tubes, complex wounds, central lines, enteral feeding tubes, TPN, CIWA monitoring, managing a Code Blue, and chemotherapy
- Perform other duties consistent with the job classification as required

Currently registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)

Graduate of a CNO-approved Practical Nursing (PN) program. Equivalent combined education and experience will be considered

Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS)
Preferred

2 years of experience in an acute care clinical environment

- Demonstrated ability in providing quality patient-focused care and addressing the fundamental care needs of patients and their families
- Proven ability to make sound professional judgements and practice decisions, and demonstrate effective time-management and organizational skills in a fast-paced work environment

- Excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills
- Excellent oral, written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in interprofessional teams
