About the role
Position Summary
Tax Manager is the primary person responsible for the efficient operation of the Company’s Canada income tax functions and will report to the Director of Tax. The Manager will have the ability to help define how to best execute the duties and responsibilities, with an eye towards compliance, process improvement, and cash tax mitigation. The Manager must be self-motivated, a strong communicator, and able to work independent of direct supervision.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Responsible for preparation of the company’s Canadian and provincial income tax compliance.
- Assist with the preparation of the annual and quarterly income tax provision.
- Assist with the preparation of the US income tax returns.
- Conduct technical research.
- Assist with the maintenance of Westmoreland’s transfer pricing methodology.
- Respond to all tax notices and audits related to the jurisdictions in which the company operates.
- Assist with the maintenance of a global income tax provision software as well as any future implementations.
- Manage various work streams and outside vendors.
- Support the tax department in other areas, as needed.
- Support Westmoreland’s established corporate business practices, policies, internal controls, and procedures designed to create value or minimize risk.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, Tax or a related field
- Minimum 5 years of complex, multinational income tax return preparation, review and controversy.
- Familiarity with recently enacted Canadian tax legislation.
- ASC 740 experience
- Canadian income tax experience a plus, but not required
- Mining experience a plus, but not required
Licenses, Registration, and Certifications
- CPA or equivalent a plus, but not required
Skills/Competencies
- Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite, including strong Excel skills and TEAMS
- Tax software for provision/compliance/research
- Strong analytical, problem-solving and organizational skills
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
- Self-starter and resourceful attitude with minimal instruction needed to get things done. Able to work remotely from the team.
Typical Physical Demands
Requires prolonged sitting, some bending, stooping and stretching. Requires constant data input for extended periods of time without leaving the work area. Occasionally lifting files or paper weighing up to 30 pounds. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator, and other office equipment. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate reports. Requires mobility sufficient to travel.
Typical Working Conditions
Must be able to primarily work remotely. Occasional evening and weekend work.
