About the program/department/team

The Department of Chemistry and Biology offers a diverse range of courses with three programs, Biology, Biomedical Science, and Chemistry. We also offer service courses to a number of other programs. The technical support team ensures that the laboratory sessions for the undergraduate students operate efficiently and safely. Our goal is to ensure an excellent experience for our students. We also support researchers with some of their technical needs.

The opportunity

The Technician position supports the Technical Specialists and Technologists in the deployment of the laboratories. This includes setting up and taking down experiments, preparing solutions and media, complex culturing, as well as cleaning. In this role, you may be required to work evenings, and would act as a resource to the Academic Assistants in the event a problem arises in the labs. The successful candidate would also assist with coordinating the work of the Laboratory Assistants in consultation with the Technical Manager.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a post-secondary diploma in a scientific field or field relevant to the academic faculty/department. A Bachelor or Master of Science in Biology (or similar discipline) preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years in testing, operating and maintaining the types of equipment and materials relevant to the science lab.
  • Experience assisting students and/or faculty during lab experiments and research.
  • Must have adequate knowledge of lab technology in order to provide technical support and expertise to students and faculty.
  • Working knowledge of WHIMIS and the Occupational Health and Safety Act of Ontario.
