Unit Clerk, Endoscopy

This is a Temporary contract position for up to Twelve (12) months Sinai Health is looking for a Unit Clerk to join the Endoscopy department. Endoscopy is a fast paced, high volume environment, which makes accuracy, speed and a commitment to providing high quality Patient and Family Centred Care essential.
About The Endoscopy Team The Endoscopy unit at Mount Sinai Hospital is at the forefront of gastrointestinal and respiratory care, performing over 9,000 endoscopic procedures each year in our state-of-the-art unit. Our skilled team conducts a diverse array of procedures to screen, diagnose and monitor gastrointestinal and respiratory conditions including but not limited to colonoscopy, gastroscopy, bronchoscopy, capsule endoscopy and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). Our unit is dedicated to utilizing the latest in medical technology to enhance patient outcomes and advance the field of endoscopy.
In This Role You Will
- Coordinate patient flow
- Receive, greet, screen and provide pertinent unit information to all patients, families, visitors and staff
- Perform clerical tasks and procedures required to prepare for patient admission, discharge and transfer
- Interview, admit and register patients according to departmental and Hospital policies and procedures
- Support unit security (e.g. initialize security bands, etc.) and respond to emergency codes
- Perform data entry of patient information accurately and efficiently in Cerner Module, including required financial information (e.g. Health Care Card, insurance, credit card, etc.)
- Processes patient appointments, physicians' orders and diagnostic orders
- Maintain patient charts, including the collection and input of unit specific statistics
- Support the collection, maintenance, distribution and communication of critical unit data e.g. lab results, census, Criticall, RESPONDER, RECALL, etc.
- Provide administrative support services to the unit e.g. posting notices, circulating minutes/memos, word processing, data entry, photocopying, printing documents for distribution, reception, answering, logging and transferring telephone calls, paging, patient care communication, ordering of supplies, maintain equipment, etc.
- Participate in professional development activities e.g. training sessions, quality improvement initiatives, policy manual reviews, etc.
- Perform other duties consistent with the job classification as required
Job Requirements Mandatory
- Successful completion of a diploma or degree from an accredited educational institution with preference given to those who have graduated from a Medical Secretary/Office Administration program
- 1 year of experience in processing various forms of payment
- Minimum 40 wpm keyboarding/data entry speed
Preferred
- 1 year of experience in an acute care environment
- Proficient in Cerner
Skills and Knowledge
- Proficiency with Patient Care Systems
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Knowledge of Medical Terminology
- Skilled at setting priorities and handling multiple tasks simultaneously; demonstrated flexibility and initiative
- Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with all levels of staff, patients and their families
- Ability to work independently and as a team player on the unit, with other departments and external stakeholders
- Proven organizational and time-management skills with a demonstrated ability to exercise tact, discretion and good judgment
- Demonstrated telephone, interpersonal and customer service skills required; compassion and good public relations skills are necessary when dealing with anxious patients and families
- Proven conflict management, problem solving and decision making skills
- Demonstrated ability to communicate and read using English in order to effectively perform essential requirements of this position
- Demonstrated satisfactory work performance and attendance history
