Horizon Health Network (Horizon) is seeking a skilled, strong, detail-oriented individual to join our team as an Operating Room Materials Coordinator.
The ideal candidate will hold a degree in a health-related discipline or equivalent combination of training and experience with a minimum of 5 years experience in an operating room setting.

Who you are
- Demonstrated knowledge of surgical instruments and operating room supplies and equipment.
- Formal training and/or experience in evaluation techniques preferred.
- Knowledge of various related provincial guidelines, government acts and regulations, standard public purchasing guidelines and fair business practice preferred.
- Ability to communicate effectively including the ability to write reports (Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point), make presentations and speak to groups.
- Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving ability.
- Ability to identify, plan and complete work assignments within established time constraints.
- Ability to work as a team member and demonstrate good interpersonal skills.
- Self-direction and ability to adapt to the diverse aspects of the position.
- Ability to travel as required.
- Good work and attendance record.
- Physically able to perform assigned duties.
- Demonstrated adherence to legislation and confidentiality to ensure all patient, business, financial and employee information is accessed on an as need to know basis.
What you will do
- Develop and coordinates a regional plan to meet the supply and equipment needs of the Miramichi Regional Hospital operating rooms.
- Resolve supply and equipment related problems to ensure the appropriate products are available when needed to provide safe patient care.
- Communicate with O.R. educator on a daily basis regarding educational needs of staff.
- Standardize operating room supplies, instrumentation and item descriptions. Reviews all products in use in operating rooms and works toward ensuring that only one product is used for the same purpose throughout. Emphasis is on maintaining and enhancing existing standards or patient care while conserving resources and improving value for expenditures.
- Responsible for lifting, packing and unpacking of equipment.
- Coordinate with the OR lead Supply Technician.
- Collaborate with OR Resource Nurse/Service Line Coordinator as required.
- Prepare a list of requests for new instrument/equipment and forwards a copy to OR Manager.
- Coordinate the purchase process of major equipment and supplies (including high tech and capital equipment) between Administrative Director, Purchasing Department, Surgical Suite OR nurses, Surgeons, Anesthesiologists and other stakeholders such as Biomedical Engineering, Information Systems and Maintenance.
- Play an active role in the budget process providing critical information on projected cost for OR materials/contracts. Provide reports
- Prepare cost/benefit analysis for new equipment or major supplies for the decision makers considering a change in practices or procedure.
- Coordinate the development of specifications for surgical supplies and equipment.
- Collaborate with ad hoc and advisory teams to develop and coordinate clinical evaluations.
- Maintain knowledge of clinical procedures and techniques as they relate to supply and equipment requirements.
- Maintain current knowledge of products and equipment in the marketplace by reviewing appropriate literature, attending exhibitions related to supplies and equipment and communicating with vendors.
- Maintain current knowledge of group purchasing contract and develops strategies to ensure optimal compliance and provides report to O.R. Manager.
- Establish surgical product inventory control by setting appropriate par levels of supplies to minimize inventory holding costs and waste due to obsolescence. Develops processes to ensure appropriate inventory stocking and delivery.
- Collaborate with the OR Manager to implement and maintain a surgical preference card system as part of the Surgical Electronic Information System/Case Costing.
- Work with Materials Management to coordinate the maintenance of all manuals related to the Case Cost System. Assumes the responsibility for the maintenance, repair and replacement of instruments and equipment. Reports to Nurse Manager of Surgical Suite
