We are accepting applications a 1.0 FTE Sign Language Interpreter at Bedford Public School.

Hours of Work: 35hours per week, 10 months per year

Compensation Package Details:

Rate of Pay: $28.11 - $30.79 per hour plus 4% vacation pay as outlined in the OSSTF-ESSP Collective Agreement as of September 1, 2025.

Pension Plan : Defined pension plan through the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS)

Reporting to the System Principal of Learning Services, this position provides access and support for students who are Deaf and/or hard of hearing and facilitates communication within the regular classroom and school setting using American Sign Language (ASL).

Responsibilities

  • Provide ASL interpretation services to student(s) in a regular classroom and school setting to:
  • access the Ontario Curriculum during instructional time;
  • access school activities during the school day (e.g., field trips, assemblies, co-curricular activities);
  • facilitate communication in and around the school environment for identified student(s);
  • communicate auditory stimuli to maintain safety (e.g. announcements, bells, emergency drills).
  • Proactively support the school team to maintain an inclusive learning environment for Deaf students by:
  • recognizing the role of the classroom teacher as the primary educator for academic learning goals and student programming;
  • assisting with implementation of instructional, environmental, and assessment accommodations (e.g., apply closed captioning to audio materials);
  • being proactive in identifying opportunities for student(s) to expand their ASL vocabulary based on curriculum content;
  • identifying, creating and facilitating opportunities for peer interactions to support and encouraging peer relationships;
  • promoting respectful learning environments and always maintaining the students' dignity;
  • engaging in communication and collaboration with the school team.
  • Provide ASL Interpreting services upon request of the school team.
  • Attend and contribute to meetings as required (e.g. school team, enhanced team, case conferences, collaboration with Provincial and Demonstration Schools Branch consultants and AMDSB Teacher of the Deaf/ Hard of Hearing)
  • Other related duties as assigned by the System Principal of Learning Services.

Preferred Qualifications, Experiences and Skills

  • Minimum three (3) year College Diploma in ASL-English Interpreting; a University Degree is an asset;
  • Active membership in good standing with the Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters (CASLI) is an asset;
  • Demonstrated expressive and receptive ASL skills
  • Demonstrated expressive and receptive spoken and written English skills
  • Experience working as an interpreter with school-aged children
  • Knowledge of the basic principles of educational practices, the function of support services, and the role of interpreters as part of the students' educational team
  • Demonstrated ability to promote equitable and inclusive education for all students, and advocate for equity-deserving groups
  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to the CASLI Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Professional Conduct
