About the Role:

The After School Worker (ASW) - SWAG plays a vital role in supporting the development and well-being of children and youth in an after-school program setting. This position focuses on creating a safe, engaging, and inclusive environment where participants can explore their interests, build social skills, and receive academic support. The role requires collaboration with team members to plan and implement activities that promote positive youth development and community engagement. The After School Worker will also serve as a mentor and role model, fostering trust and encouraging positive behavior among participants. Ultimately, this position aims to contribute to the holistic growth of children and youth by providing consistent support and guidance during critical after-school hours.

As an ASW, you must maintain effective communication of information among volunteers, mentors, tutors, teachers and other providers of services to students grade 9-10 enrolled in the SWAG program. Having the ability to establish appropriate relationships with youth, and with professionals within a multi-disciplinary team is key.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience working with children and youth in a community or educational setting.
  • Clear criminal record check including vulnerable sector screening.
  • Basic knowledge of child development and youth engagement principles.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with children, parents, and team members.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education in social work, education, child and youth care, or a related field.
  • First aid and CPR certification.
  • Experience working in after-school or community-based programs.
  • Familiarity with culturally diverse communities and inclusive programming.
  • Skills in conflict resolution and behavior management.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and engage children and youth in a variety of recreational, educational, and social activities.
  • Develop and implement program activities that align with the goals of the SWAG after-school initiative.
  • Provide homework assistance and academic support to participants as needed.
  • Ensure a safe and inclusive environment by monitoring behavior and addressing conflicts constructively.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, parents, and community partners to support participant needs and program success.
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, incidents, and program outcomes.
  • Participate in regular team meetings and professional development opportunities.

Skills:

The After School Worker will utilize strong interpersonal and communication skills daily to build rapport with children, youth, and their families, ensuring a supportive environment. Organizational skills are essential for planning and executing engaging activities that meet program objectives while managing multiple tasks efficiently. Problem-solving and conflict resolution skills are applied regularly to address behavioral challenges and maintain a positive atmosphere. The ability to work collaboratively with team members and community partners enhances program delivery and participant outcomes. Additionally, cultural sensitivity and adaptability are important to meet the diverse needs of participants and foster inclusivity within the program.
