**Primary Purpose:**The Information Technology (IT) Infrastructure Team Lead (Networks) provides technical leadership and coordination for the university’s enterprise network services, including campus networking, data center connectivity, wireless infrastructure, electronic protective services, firewalls and security appliances, and core network services such as DNS and DHCP. This role enables the delivery of reliable, secure, and high-performing network services that support the teaching, research, and administrative goals of the university.

**Nature of Work:**The team lead provides technical leadership and coordination across infrastructure services with a primary focus on system administration and project delivery related to network services. The team lead assigns work, mentors colleagues, and sets technical direction within a matrixed team while reporting to the IT Infrastructure Manager. This position leads service management practices across incident, problem, change, availability, and service development. This role collaborates closely with other infrastructure team leads as well as Enterprise Architecture and IT security teams. The team lead contributes to lifecycle planning, continuous improvement, and engages with both vendors and enterprise procurement.

This position will be based in-person at the University of Saskatchewan campus in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The position may be eligible for hybrid work under the terms of USask's Alternative Workspace Guidelines. Occasional evening or weekend work is required to support critical systems or scheduled maintenance

Typical Duties or Accountabilities:

  • Leads technical direction for the network team within infrastructure services, assigning work packages, mentoring team members, prioritizing work and project execution, and overseeing day-to-day operations.
  • Leads network service management activities throughout the service lifecycle, from service conception to sunset, within the larger portfolio of network services and provides technical leadership across multiple networking domains (ie,, LAN/WAN, wireless, firewalls, telephony, EPS, VSS, DNS/DHCP, etc.).
  • Partners with Enterprise Architecture and Security Operations to align security controls and infrastructure service designs with institutional standards and leading practices while enhancing reliability, performance, and integrity objectives.
  • Leads major incident coordination for infrastructure services, supporting effective triage, communication, and restoration as well as advancing problem management to mitigate future incidents.
  • Implements IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) aligned practices across incident, problem, change, availability, and service development, using structured methods to minimize disruption and mitigate operational risk.
  • Coordinates change management activities, including risk assessment, testing rigor, implementation planning, and post-implementation review.
  • Develops and maintains operational documentation, runbooks, standard operating procedures, build guides, and asset records to support consistent delivery and handoffs.
  • Establishes monitoring and observability processes for performance, capacity, and availability, reviewing metrics and service level agreements to identify improvements.
  • Contributes to lifecycle planning, technology refresh roadmaps, and service modernization initiatives; recommends options based on analysis of risk, cost, functionality, and alignment with institutional priorities.
  • Guides continuous improvement initiatives and adoption of automation and modernization to streamline routine administration and reduce operational toil.
  • Engages in vendor and contract activities, such as orders, quotes, licensing, and delivery schedules, and participates as a technical subject matter expert in larger procurement processes.
  • Provides input to budget forecasting and planning for infrastructure services.
  • Communicates service status, risks, and improvement plans to stakeholders and the unit’s leadership team, supporting transparency and timely updates.
  • Coordinates system administration activities for network service platforms to support reliability, performance, and security.
  • Organizes and participates in scheduled maintenance windows, coordinating activities to minimize user impact.
  • Remediates issues in a large, multi-segment, campus network connected to multiple internet and research networks and remote sites.
  • Programs and troubleshoots network elements across multiple network domains.
  • Communicates and acts in a respectful and professional manner, collaborates effectively, abides by policy, and contributes to a positive and productive work and learning environment.
  • Engages in continuous learning by participating in activities, training, and events related to Indigenous engagement, reconciliation, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrates respect and dignity for all members of the community, actively contributes to an environment of acceptance and inclusion of others, and responds to different perspectives from a place of curiosity, respect, and non-judgement.

Education:

  • We appreciate that non-traditional career paths may have developed a candidate’s competency, and alternate combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • A bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, engineering, or a related field.
  • Industry certifications such as ITIL Foundation or platform specific certifications in systems, networking, storage/backup, or cloud are assets.
  • Industry certifications in automation, scripting, and infrastructure as code (IaC) are assets.

Experience:

  • Minimum of five years’ experience in large scale enterprise environments delivering infrastructure services, such as networks, systems administration, and data center infrastructure, with evidence of technical leadership and project coordination.
  • Experience collaborating with security and enterprise architecture teams, vendors, and cross functional teams in complex environments.
  • Applied experience in ITIL practices, including incident, problem, change, and availability management.

Skills:

  • Demonstrated expertise in one or more network domains (ie,, LAN/WAN, wireless, firewalls, telephony, EPS, DNS/DHCP, etc.) and one or more infrastructure domains (ie,, networks, virtualization, storage/backup, identity and core services, etc.) with breadth to coordinate across domains.
  • Sound judgement and strong time management skills.
  • Strong communication skills for interactions with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Well-established mentorship and facilitation skills.
  • Extensive technical knowledge of network hardware such as switches, routers, wireless access points and protocols (TCP/IP, VLANs, DHCP, DNS).
  • Experience in scripting and automation (ie,, Python, PowerShell, etc.).
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documentation, schematics, and configuration guides.
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills across physical and logical network layers.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively in a diverse environment.
  • Ability to perform moderate physical tasks in various locations across campus including but not limited to equipment installation and lifting, wiring, work in constrained areas, and work at modest heights.
