Position Description
Acute Care Psychiatry Service - RN (part time)

Linked to our ambitious Mental Health Strategy and within the Brain and Mental Health Program, the Department of Psychiatry is responding to unprecedented growth in mental health needs across the many pediatric populations we serve.
As a member of the Acute Care Psychiatry Service, you will be part of a multi-disciplinary team that provides direct inpatient care to children/youth and support mental health care within the Emergency Department and across the hospital. The team also provides direct support to prevent agitation and aggression for at-risk patients of the hospital.
Here is What You Will Do:
- Work as part of the Acute Care Psychiatry Services on call to support emergency department assessments and psychiatry consults to inpatient units and outpatient clinics across the hospital.
- Triage referrals and consult requests for Psychiatry to most appropriate services; communicate with referring teams/services
- Provide support and direction in the prevention of behavioural escalations in children and youth; respond to Code White situations with patients to ensure the safety of the patient, family, and care team.
- Develop and support plans of care in collaboration with the child/family and the multidisciplinary team.
- When appropriate, provide therapeutic engagement/supervision to patients experiencing acute health and mental health issues.
- Support patient and family through admission inclusive of situational crisis.
- Support the inpatient mental health team as needed.
Here is What You'll Need:
- Baccalaureate degree and/or Diploma in Nursing
- Registration with the College of Nurses in Ontario as a Registered Nurse
- Experience in paediatric nursing; experience in mental health/psychiatry an asset
- Demonstrated ability to use your critical thinking, problem-solving and teamwork abilities
- Experience working with adolescents in acute mental health settings an asset
- Understanding of the issues of health equity, anti-black racism, diversity and inclusion in the context of health service delivery
- Experience and training in non-violent crisis prevention and intervention an asset
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills when working with patients, families
- Ability to collaborate effectively as a member of the interdisciplinary health care team and to take initiative when appropriate
- Excellent organizational and time management skills and demonstrated ability to utilize critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work in a dynamic fast paced healthcare environment where respect, accountability and transparency are highly valued aspects of the team environment
- Demonstrated proficiency in using electronic healthcare platforms such as EPIC and Office 365
- Demonstrates commitment and actions in advancing equity, diversity and inclusion objectives
