About Us
The Ministry of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety is responsible for overseeing Saskatchewan’s correctional system and facilities, providing guidance and support to Saskatchewan’s municipal police services.
The Custody, Supervision and Rehabilitation Services staff work with partners and stakeholders to provide effective services for adults and youth in conflict with the law with the goal of reducing re-offending and improving the ability of offenders to reintegrate into their communities.
The Opportunity
The Ministry of Corrections, Policy and Public Safety is seeking a Shop Instructor for its Prince Albert Correctional Center. Reporting to the Occupational Coordinator, the successful candidate will provide training and learning instructions to offenders on construction works including carpentry and the use of technical machinery, equipment and tools within a correctional environment.
As Shop Instructor, you will:
- Train offenders in the safe operation, maintenance, repair and use of technical machinery, equipment and tools utilized in the Builds and Trades industry.
- Design, develop and deliver lessons to offenders for enrollment in carpentry pre-trade and apprenticeship programs at various institutions.
- Evaluate the entry level competencies and program suitability of offenders.
- Support and assess offenders' progress in the classroom/shop, focusing on program development, behavior, and personal challenges.
- Supervise offender activities, regulates and ensures security in the classroom/shop for offenders and non-institutional visitors.
- Perform essential administrative duties and responsibilities including maintenance of records, attendance, material supply and inventory, offender pay, invoices, etc.
- Collaborate with correctional staff, Indigenous groups, community agencies, educational institutions and other partners to support offenders; progress, secure funding for continued education, and facilitate referrals to community programs.
Our Ideal Candidate will:
- Have demonstrated knowledge of or experience in carpentry and construction.
- Demonstrate a firm understanding of safety protocols in the use of carpentry and construction tools/equipment.
- Demonstrate high attention to details in every task.
- Be service-oriented with the ability to foster strong and trust-based relationships.
- Demonstrate the ability to assess dynamic environments, anticipate potential risks, and adapt responses in real time.
Typically, the knowledge and skills required for this position would be gained through obtaining a valid trade certificate combined with relevant trade experience including some teaching and/or supervisory experience. Teaching and/or supervisory experience in a correctional environment will be considered an asset.
