About the role
Applications are now being accepted for a Part-Time Registered Nurse to work in the Perioperative Services Department. The successful applicant will be required to work rotating shifts, scheduled Monday-Sunday between 0700-1500, 0730-1530, 0800-1600, 0900-1700, and 1100-1900 including holidays – with standby. It is required that you must be at the hospital within 30 minutes of being called in.
The candidate will be required to rotate throughout all of perioperative services - Day Surgery, PACU, and Operating Room.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Adhere to policies and procedures established for the assigned department while supporting the Mission, Vision and Values of Erie Shores HealthCare
- Maintain the confidentiality of all patient information
- Communicating in a positive and supportive manner, thus appreciating the stressful situation
- Maintaining confidentiality of all patient information
- Assuming patient advocate role when patient is unable to represent self
- Demonstrate knowledge of the policies and procedures related to the care of the patient in the perioperative space. This includes:
Circulating
- Assisting anesthetists with induction, monitoring and care of the anaesthetized patient
- Providing scrub team with sterile supplies
- Maintaining pre and intra-operative documentation as per Operating Room (OR) Standards
- Adhering to principles of aseptic technique
- Appropriate care and handling of instruments and specialized equipment
- Ensuring appropriate supplies, instruments and equipment are available
- Demonstrating knowledge of the compliance with established policies and procedures
Recovery Room
- Receives patients from the OR or Endoscopy suites
- Remains responsible for the primary care of post-operative patients, including phase 1 and 2 recovery; including assessment, intervention, education and patient advocacy
Day Surgery
- Prepares patients for surgery, including taking and documenting an appropriate history, starting an IV as indicated, and explaining the surgical journey to the patient
- Escalates any patient safety concerns immediately to the most responsible physician (MRP) or Anesthetists
QUALIFICATIONS
- Certificate of Competence with the College of Nurses (CNO) required
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) required
- Certificate in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) required
- Certificate in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
- Certificate in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
- Certification in Operating Room nursing required
- 2 years recent history in Perioperative nursing preferred
- Education in Critical Care nursing preferred
- Recovery room and Perioperative experience preferred
- Able to demonstrate a progressive history of continuing education within the specialty
- Knowledge and commitment to patient centered care model
- Leadership ability
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Excellent crisis management skills
- Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team
- Ability to work shift work

- Good attendance record and a level of fitness appropriate for the demands of the position is a requirement
