About the role

Join our team at the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo and grow your experience at one of the most unique sites in Calgary! The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is seeking aseasonal Concessions Baristawho will work in the Concessions Department will make café food and speciality coffee and other drinks to order, help keep the establishment clean, keep track of inventory and order supplies as needed, clean-up and cash. The position consists of operating various concession outlets and food carts throughout the zoo.

Contract:

  • Start Date: April 2026
  • End Date: September 2026

What you will do:

  • Process customer orders and prepare all corresponding café food items and specialty beverages
  • Maintains a calm and welcoming demeanor during periods of high volume or unusual events;
  • Sets a positive example for the shift team.
  • Anticipates customer and Outlet needs by constantly evaluating environment and customers for cues.
  • Communicates information to manager so that the team can respond as necessary.
  • Assists with new staff training by positively reinforcing successful performance and giving respectful and encouraging coaching as needed.
  • Provides feedback to manager on operations during shift.
  • Creates a positive learning environment by providing clear, specific, timely and respectful coaching and feedback to ensure operational excellence.
  • Delivers excellent customer service to all customers by acting with a "customer comes first" attitude and connecting with the customer.
  • Discovers and responds to customer needs.
  • Develops positive relationships with shift team by understanding and addressing individual motivation, need and concerns.
  • Organizes opening and closing duties as assigned.
  • Follows all cash management and cash register policies and ensures proper cash management practices are followed by shift team.
  • Maintains regular and consistent attendance and punctuality.
  • Provides quality beverages, and food products consistently for all customers by adhering to all recipe and presentation standards.
  • Follows health, safety and sanitation guidelines for all products.

What you will bring:

  • At least six months of Barista experience
  • ProServe Required
  • Food Safety Certification Required
  • Responsible, productive, punctual and reliable with a strong work ethic
  • Superior customer service skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team as well as unsupervised
  • Ability to work outdoors
  • Positive attitude

Working Conditions:

  • Standing during whole shift
  • Weekday, weekend, holiday and evening hours (during Zoolights)
  • Working in a variety of indoor and outdoor conditions (heat, sun, pollen, cold, smoke)
  • Pushing, pulling, lifting up to 30 lbs

The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is an outdoor facility and all staff working at the zoo must be comfortable working in a large variety of outdoor conditions. The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo follows the advice of Environment Canada when responding to temperature and air quality issues.
