As part of the Student Experience portfolio, Accessible Education provides resources and supports to registered students with disabilities at Western. Team members work one-to-one with students to understand needs and recommend academic accommodations that help ensure equity, inclusion, and full participation in the educational environment.
Responsibilities
The Assistive Technologist works collaboratively to support students with disabilities through the use of assistive technologies and alternative format text to reduce barriers and enable full participation at Western University. The Assistive Technologist meets with students who require technological support as part of an accommodation plan and assesses medical documentation, psych-educational assessments and conducts functional assessments with students. The Assistive Technologist applies this information, in combination with industry standards and clinical judgement, to design and facilitate an individualized adaptive technology-supported accommodation plan. These plans incorporate the students’ technology-based needs, training on the usage of adaptive technology and specific learning strategies. The Assistive Technologist works to ensure adaptive technologies are aligned with academic accommodation plans and do not interfere with academic integrity and the essential requirements of a specific courses and/or program.
Qualifications
Education:
- Graduate degree in Rehabilitation Sciences, Health Science, Adult Education, Special Education, Social Work, or other related discipline
- Assistive technology professional certification
- Eligible for registration with a professional college in Ontario (e.g. Ontario College of Teachers, or as defined by the Registered Heath Professions Ace (1991) or the Social Work and Social Service Work Act (1998))
- Independent Authorizer – Assistive Devices Program of Ontario (Communication Aids) preferred
Experience:
- 3 years' experience in the field of assistive technology, preferably in an educational or disability services setting
- Demonstrated experience with a broad range of assistive technologies and adaptive software
- Experience with selecting and using assistive technology to support students in completing academic work that complements the students’ unique learning needs and their learning strategy plan
- Experience creating training materials is preferred
- Experience with learning management systems would be an asset
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Advanced knowledge of assistive technologies such as screen readers, voice-to-text software, and text-to-speech tools
- Familiarity with accessibility features in both Windows and Mac
- Demonstrated understanding of how the symptoms or functional limitations of a disability impact an individual's daily functioning at the post-secondary level
- Excellent communication skills, oral and written
- Experience performing assistive technology assessments for persons with disabilities, identifying technology, and facilitating learning through instruction
- In-depth knowledge of best practices for handling sensitive and confidential information
- Demonstrated understanding of disability issues, relevant legislation and community resources
- Experience and/or training in supporting students in crisis and securing appropriate support
- Ability to source new information resources for clients to seek resolution to challenges through research
- Ability to think innovatively and propose/initiate new services or delivery models that meet the needs of a diverse range of clients
- Ability to collaborate across internal and external boundaries to meet common objectives, improve outcomes and support work beyond one's own unit
- Communication skills to listen to the complete message, solicit more information as required, and give feedback on the message received
- Ability to effectively present information, and conduct training sessions and workshops
- Ability to ensure confidentiality and privacy is maintained through the appropriate retention and destruction of information
- Innovative and flexible critical thinking skills to adjust to and implement new processes or technology to the University’s advantage
- Ability to make decisions and recommendations that are clearly linked to the organization's strategy and goals
- Commitment to ongoing professional development with a desire to take on new challenges
- Discretion, tact and maturity to deal with highly confidential subjects or issues
- Ability to multi-task and maintain an organized and effective personal work environment
- Ability to apply regulations or professional standards to own work
- Problem solving skills and sound professional judgment, especially regarding confidential/sensitive matters

- Excellent communication skills to effectively interact with technical and non-technical users
- Knowledge of AODA accessibility stands and web accessibility guidelines
