About the role
Some of what you will do:
The FP&A Manager is responsible for consolidating and reporting B2B financials, including line of business (LOB) and segment P&L models. They oversee planning and reporting of home office expenditures (e.g., headcount, labor capitalization, allocations) across Staples Canada. This role supports senior leaders across multiple departments—such as B2B Sales, Operations, IT, HR, Legal, Marketing, and more—on strategic planning, budgeting, and forecasting to drive results and cost control. The Manager tracks quarterly and annual targets, identifies opportunities to improve financial performance, and contributes to strategic business planning. They also mentor a senior FP&A Analyst, providing guidance on reporting, modeling, and analysis.
The ideal candidate has a strong finance background, analytical and technical skills, and excellent communication abilities to engage across all levels, including executive leadership. They are a proactive self-starter focused on continuous improvement and business efficiency.
Specifically, You Will:
- Cost Centre Oversight: Manage all cost centers, ensuring timely communication, accurate month-end accruals, and updated forecasts with business partners.
- Budget & Forecast Management: Lead full-cycle planning for resources, software, benefits, and labor capitalization across Salesforce and home office.
- Financial Modeling & Reporting: Build and maintain models for LOB and market segment P&L reporting; deliver timely and insightful financial reports.
- Strategic Planning Support: Contribute to long-range planning and strategy development, including variance analysis and commentary.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Liaise with departments like Sales, Accounting, IT, and FP&A teams to align financial planning and performance, special projects
- Team Leadership: Mentor FP&A analysts, fostering engagement through coaching, development, and performance management. Process Improvement & Insights: Drive system/process enhancements and deliver actionable reporting to highlight performance trends and business drivers.
Some of what you need:
- University degree (B.A.) with commerce/business administration focus or equivalent in work experience is required.
- Completion of a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation or MBA preferred
- Exceptional financial analytical ability skills preferably developed in a B2B and/or retail environment
- 2 to 3 years experience as a FP&A Manager or similar role, successfully leading and managing a team through budgeting and planning cycle
- Experience in retail, particularly multiple-location/national and multi-channel retail is an asset
- 10+ years of broad based operational finance experience with progressive responsibility and a strong focus on FP&A
- Critical thinking, can see the ‘big picture’ in a complex business environment
- Excellent analytical skills, with attention to detail
- High proficiency using Microsoft Office programs, primarily Excel, Word and PowerPoint mandatory and experience in building Excel Macros is preferred
- Comfort and confident in dealing with senior leadership
- Strong communication skills and the ability to clearly present complex information to non-technical business partners, including senior management
- Ability to interpret large amounts of financial and non-financial data and summarize it to present meaningful information to various levels of management
- Time management and self-management skills
- Thinks strategically, synthesizes complex data, and develops creative and innovative solutions
- Demonstrated leadership skills, including coaching, mentoring, and motivating others Proficiency in Power BI and SQL are strong assets, but not required
