The Technical Manager is responsible for planning, organization, execution, and oversight of the divisional technical and quality management program. This program is based on the principles of ISO 9000 and includes technical oversight from the logs through the plywood and the LVL operations. This role is accountable for the day-to-day achievement of the exemplary in process and finished product standards. This role also leads the analysis of key process indicators to enhance product performance and to optimize the production cost model.

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Technical Manager to lead and oversee the divisional quality control program at our engineered wood products (“EWP”) manufacturing facility located in Heffley Creek, British Columbia. This role is critical in ensuring the consistent delivery of high-quality laminated veneer lumber (LVL), plywood, and residual products while supporting operational efficiency and safety.

Our ideal candidate has the following qualifications:

  • Degree or diploma in Wood Science, Forestry, Engineering, or a related technical field.

  • Minimum 5–10 years of experience in quality control or production management within the wood products or manufacturing industry.

  • Strong knowledge of engineered wood manufacturing processes and quality standards.

  • Proven leadership experience with the ability to manage and develop teams.

  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

  • Experience with finger jointing and face laminating is an asset.

  • Familiarity with quality management systems (e.g., ISO 9001) and continuous improvement methodologies (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma) is an asset.

In this role you will:

  • Serve as an active member of the Product Quality & Technical Group.

  • Plan, organize, execute, and oversee the divisional quality management program across all production areas, including Logs, Log Handling, Peeling, Veneer Drying & Grading, Plywood/PLV Production, and EWP Production.

  • Monitor and ensure adherence to quality standards, analyzing performance against budget and implementing corrective action plans for areas with negative product performance and/or financial variance.

  • Collaborate daily with internal teams including Woodlands, Logyard, Maintenance, Production staff, and the Product Quality & Technical Group.

  • Maintain strong external relationships with 3rd party certification agencies and vendors (calibration, resins, sealants, etc.)

  • Works with the Product Quality & Technical Group on the deployment, ongoing execution, and continuous improvement of the Tolko Quality Management System (TQM 9000) at site.

  • Lead and resolve quality issues within areas of responsibility, ensuring alignment with production goals and safety standards.

  • Investigate site related customer claims & complaints and ensure effective corrective actions are implemented.

  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement.

  • Participate in divisional strategic planning, contributing to 3–5-year operational and quality improvement plans.

  • Supervise, train, and develop site Technical Team and hourly support employees.

  • Support the Site Manager in long-term recapitalization planning and explore innovative ideas aligned with the company’s strategic direction.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to solve quality and process challenges and contribute to the development of new products and procedures.

  • General house cleaning duties of lab designated areas.

  • Other duties as assigned
