Job Title: Baggage Operator
Reports To: Manager, Airport Operations
Type: Permanent, Full Time
Closing Date: October 8, 2025
The Opportunity
Reporting to the Manager, Airport Operations, the Baggage Operator plays a vital role in ensuring the seamless functioning of the airport’s baggage handling systems. This position is responsible for monitoring system performance, conducting quality control checks, and performing manual baggage processing as needed to maintain efficient airport operations. By adhering to established procedures and collaborating with stakeholders, the Baggage Operator ensures that passengers experience minimal disruptions in their travel journey. This role directly contributes to the safety, operational efficiency, and reputation of the Winnipeg Airports Authority.
Responsibilities include:
- Monitor baggage systems to ensure efficiency
- Report baggage handling system anomalies to maintenance providers
- Create tickets for tracking and trending of baggage system concerns
- Foster strong working relationships with other bag room stakeholders
- Promote and monitor best practices in baggage operations
- Identify and report baggage tagging issues to leadership
- Monitor and address baggage hygiene within the baggage handling system
- Manually enter misread bag tags into the system
- Ensure accurate baggage sorting and flow
- Conduct daily inspections of the baggage handling system
- Safely clear baggage jams in baggage handling system
- Perform light maintenance tasks as needed
- Complete shift reports and log operational incidents
- Escalate violations of baggage handling protocols (e.g. ground handler infractions)
- Perform other relations duties as assigned
Selection Criteria include:
- Grade 12 diploma or equivalent
- Minimum one (1) year of experience in baggage operations or similar role preferred
- Working knowledge of baggage handling systems and related operational protocols
- Familiarity with irregular operations and contingency procedures
- Strong coordinator skills with stakeholders and maintenance providers
- Understanding of relevant safety regulations and their application in baggage operations
- Knowledge of airport layouts and airline specific baggage processes
- Familiarity with technologies such as barcode scanners, automated sorting equipment and photo eye sensors
- Basic knowledge of emergency response protocols related to baggage operations
- Understanding of Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and their impact on operational decision making
