Supervisor, Laboratory Assistants

Job Summary:
The Supervisor, Laboratory Assistant supervises Laboratory Assistants and designated staff at the assigned site, performs the functions of a Laboratory Assistant as required, and performs various related clerical
functions.
Duties/Accountabilities:
- Supervises Lab Assistants and other designated staff by performing duties such as scheduling, coordinating and prioritizing work assignments, assisting with evaluating employee
performance, and determining related training and orientation requirements.

Calls in and allocates relief staff to fill temporary vacancies in accordance with established procedures.

Performs clerical duties such as processing billing paperwork, performing timekeeping functions, compiling workload statistics, making patient appointments, maintaining filing system for lab reports,
monitoring and ordering phlebotomy and office supplies, answering the telephone and entering patient information and test results into the laboratory information system. Communicates test results to
designated parties and handles inquiries from other health care professionals.

Performs the duties of a Laboratory Assistant as required including specimen collection, preparation and testing and related clerical functions.

Provides input into the department's orientation, policy and procedures manual on areas pertaining to the work performed by Lab Assistants at the assigned site; assists with maintaining manuals by typing
approved updates as required.

Maintains a clean and safe work area according to established policies and procedures.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education, Training & Experience
Grade 12, successful completion of a recognized Lab Assistant training program, plus three years' recent, related experience including one year in a supervisory capacity or an equivalent combination of education,
training and experience.
Skills & Abilities
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Ability to deal with others effectively.
Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
Ability to supervise.
Ability to organize work.
Ability to type 25 w.p.m.
Ability to operate related equipment.
