Location: Ottawa, ON (Hybrid Work Model)
Base Salary: $110,000 – $120,000 per year
Position Overview Our client, an established and well-respected organization with a strong presence in the real estate and investment sector is seeking a Manager, Tax to join their team in Ottawa. The Opportunity Reporting to the Director of Taxation, you’ll play a key role in the organization’s tax function, contributing to compliance, financial reporting, cash management, and forward-looking tax planning. This position offers exposure to a variety of complex structures, including partnerships, trusts, and REITs, making it an excellent opportunity for someone looking to broaden their expertise.
Key Responsibilities Tax Compliance & Reporting
- Prepare and review Canadian income tax returns for corporations, partnerships, and trusts (including REITs).
- Oversee GST/HST return preparation and ensure filings are accurate and timely.
- Manage annual returns for foreign reporting in Canada (T1134, T106, Country by Country Reporting, Pillar II).
- Monitor and maintain the company’s REIT and mutual fund trust status.
- Assist with outsourcing of U.S. tax return preparation.
Financial Tax Reporting & Audit Support
- Prepare and review quarterly and annual income tax provisions, disclosures, and test calculations under IFRS.
- Support annual audits, liaising with both internal teams and external auditors/CRA as needed.
- Ensure accuracy of tax balances and reconciliations within consolidated financial statements.
Tax Forecasting & Projections
- Assist with cash tax forecasting as part of the annual budget and long-term planning process.
- Manage corporate instalments and income taxes payable to optimize cash flow.
- Prepare accurate REIT test projections to ensure ongoing compliance.
Tax Planning & Strategy
- Partner with Finance and operational teams to provide proactive tax insights that support strategic decision-making.
- Assist in the development and implementation of tax planning strategies to minimize risk and maximize value.
- Monitor new legislative developments and assess their impact on the organization’s tax position.
Process Improvements & Special Projects
- Contribute to process and systems improvements to streamline compliance and reporting.
- Maintain and update the legal entity corporate organizational chart.
- Conduct ongoing research on tax issues and provide recommendations for continuous improvement.
Job Qualifications
- CPA designation with completion or current peursual of the In-Depth Tax Course (or equivalent)
- 4+ years of progressive corporate tax experience in public practice or industry
- Strong understanding of Canadian income tax, GST/HST, and IFRS tax provisions
- Experience with REITs, trusts, and real estate taxation is a strong asset
- Exceptional communication skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage competing priorities
Compensation This role offers a competitive salary in the range of $110,000 – $120,000 per year, based on experience. Additional benefits include bonus, full extended health and dental coverage, a company RRSP plan, professional development support, and flexible hybrid/remote work options (2 days a week in office).
