PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Manager – Clinical Laboratory Services; Histopathology Lab Clerks can be assigned to one of two functional areas. Incumbents may be cross trained on all functions to provide coverage or redistributed when required.
Registers requests for laboratory analysis of patient specimens in the HIS. Answers telephone and provides information as requested.
Acts as a point of contact for internal and external requests for molecular genetics testing and coordination of incoming and outgoing cases for consult and/or additional testing. Also provides transcription, typing, filing (slides and/or blocks) services for medical and technical staff.
Within this role the employee is accountable for contributing to the delivery of the Kingston General Hospital strategy. As an employee, one must demonstrate an awareness of and be responsible for actively promoting and supporting patient and family centered engagement and care in all we do.
PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Registers requests for laboratory analysis of patient specimens into the HIS. This may include document scanning, entering and confirming patient demographics, creating new patient visits, transcribing patient clinical information, and assigning laboratory numbers to patient specimens.

Acts as a point of contact for internal and external requests for molecular genetics testing. This includes retrieving and compiling materials and documentation and sending to Genetics.

Coordination of incoming and outgoing cases (blocks and slides) for consult and/or additional testing. This includes returning material upon completion.

Transcribe and types laboratory reports

Retrieves, re-prints and distributes (via paper & electronically) laboratory reports to various locations as required.

Prints various pre-defined operational and quality assurance reports from the HIS and distributes as appropriate. Assists with quality assurance audits as required.

Answers telephone and provides information as appropriate. This includes coordination of frozen section delivery with the courier and off site collection site.

Working closely with the laboratory MLT/MLA processing laboratory samples or generating SAFE reports when required.

Other duties as assigned, duties will change depending on the laboratory and needs of the department

QUALIFICATIONS:

Medical Office Administration Diploma (2 year) or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Six months clerical experience.

Ability to use personal computer, Dictaphones and Photocopier.

Keyboarding 50 wpm on test.
-
70% on Medical terminology test.
-
Proficiency with Windows applications Microsoft Word (Level 1), Outlook.

Able to work as a member of a team.
-
Able to set priorities in workload
-
Able to accept work from other than immediate supervisor.

Strong interpersonal skills.
-
Proven ability to attend work regularly.
-
Satisfactory criminal reference check and vulnerable sector search required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The applicant must be able to meet the physical demands of this position.
