Engineering Team Lead - Heavy Equipment

Position Highlights The Generation Stations Mechanical Engineering division has an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Engineering Team
Lead to join as the leader of the Heavy Equipment team.
The team is based at BC Hydro’s Edmonds facility in Burnaby and consists of mechanical engineers and consultants who
support the delivery of BCH generation capital projects involving large mechanical equipment such as cranes, hydraulic
valves and gates. This is a leadership opportunity suitable for someone who has an affinity for teambuilding, and for working
within cross-discipline groups to deliver on the organization’s goals.
What you'll do
Working closely with other Engineering teams, Stations Asset Planning, Project Delivery and Operations groups, the Heavy
Equipment Team Lead will provide leadership to a team and successfully carry out the following duties:
- Provide leadership, support, and advice to team members, encourage their work initiative, and help them grow as
engineers and technical leaders.
- Be a leader in working safely and efficiently. Demonstrate strong commitment to safety. Create a culture where safety is
first, and where employees are recognized for safe performance and compliance with safety regulations and safe work
practices.

Act as a key point of contact for internal clients, understanding their needs and ensuring effective communication.

Ensure that qualified internal and external resources are available and have the required expertise and tools to complete
the work with high quality, value, on schedule, and on budget.
- Develop a staffing strategy and recruit, select, and promote staff, and/or procure consulting services. Implement an
employee development program in order to cultivate and maintain the required expertise. Foster collaboration and
knowledge transfer, coaching and mentoring, and organizational awareness.
- Establish review procedures, technical and quality assurance standards. Review, enhance, and develop methods,
procedures, and technical standards to take advantage of new technology. Improve department effectiveness and
efficiency.
- Proactively undertake and/or significantly contribute to problem identification, risk mitigation, and the development of
customized solutions to complex engineering problems considering the broader value, benefit, and risk to BC Hydro.
- Act as a positive role model for the business, fostering teamwork and engagement of team members to contribute to
achieving the company goals.
- Support the Division Manager on various initiatives. The Team Lead may support Company-wide initiatives and be an
active part in developing those initiatives.

Ensure team adherence to BC Hydro and industry standards, policies, practices, and procedures.

Coach and mentor team members to investigate and analyze challenging or unusual technical problems, to evaluate risks,
and to develop solutions to problems.

Develop team business objectives, standards, and performance measurements.

Manage the team performance to meet objectives.

Ensure that team resources resolve all queries in a timely manner.

Facilitate the development of employee soft skills including persuasive influence, collaboration, and conflict resolution.

Develop engineering capabilities of the team and drive ongoing improvements in the planning for and execution of work.

Lead by example by demonstrating BC Hydro’s commitment to a diverse, respectful, and inclusive workforce.

Advocate for professional practice and ensure team members are knowledgeable about professional practice
requirements and their work complies with the Engineers and Geoscientists BC Quality Management Guidelines and BC
Hydro’s Professional Practice Management Plan (PPMP).
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with equipment suppliers, consultants, contractors, and other parts of
BC Hydro.
What you bring
The successful candidate must demonstrate:

A minimum Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering or other relevant, equivalent degree
-
A minimum of 10 years of progressive engineering experience
-
Registration or eligibility for registration as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientist of British Columbia
(EGBC). The individual shall be proficient with EGBC quality management guidelines.
- Experience related to one or more of the following equipment: hoists; bridge and gantry cranes; spillway and operating
gates; and hydraulic valves. This could include experience with: detailed design; performance investigations; repairs/
modifications; seismic and other upgrades; installation of new equipment. Experience with other, similar industrial
equipment may be considered.

Knowledge of the hydropower industry and similar transferrable experience is an asset.
