ERA’s mission is to reduce emissions, lower costs, attract investment, and create jobs through innovative projects.
The Opportunity
Reporting to the Executive Director, Technology and Innovation, the Clean Fuels Technology Director will oversee the implementation and management of funding programs under ERA’s new Clean Fuel Regulations (CFR) Compliance Fund. The Compliance Fund directs compliance payments into high-impact projects through both continuous intake and competitive funding calls.
Working closely with the Clean Fuels Compliance Fund Director, the successful candidate will be responsible for developing, planning, and executing ERA’s Clean Fuels funding programs. This includes managing individual funding streams, supporting proponents, advising applicants, and overseeing a portfolio of funded Clean Fuels projects. The Director will interact extensively with ERA’s Executive Team and cross-functional groups, including technical, greenhouse gas, finance, and strategy teams. As the primary point of contact for applicants, the Director will ensure the delivery of fair, transparent, and effective programming. This is a senior leadership role within the organization.
Key Responsibilities
• Program Coordination: Collaborate with the Clean Fuels Compliance Fund Director to ensure funding programs align with CFR criteria and regulatory requirements. Share insights and feedback to inform funding call design and ensure a seamless experience for applicants and stakeholders.
• Intake Program Delivery: Lead the design, planning, and delivery of funding programs, including the development of guidelines, timelines, and resource allocation.
• Oversee the CFR proposal evaluation process, managing external subject matter experts on the Clean Fuels Project Evaluation Committee.
• Moderate evaluation presentations and technical discussions.
• Coordinate ERA personnel and support teams involved in the intake and evaluation process.
• Participate in cross-program activities such as proposal pre-screening and applicant outreach.
• Report regularly to the executive team and Board of Directors regarding program status and opportunity pipelines.
• Prepare high-quality deliverables, including briefing notes, dashboards, and technical recommendation documents.
• Support performance management and data collection initiatives related to CFR proposal intake and assessment.
• Lead continuous improvement initiatives to streamline the intake process and implement best practices.
Opportunity Development & Applicant Support
• Serve as the primary contact for current and prospective CFR applicants, supporting project development and guiding applicants through the intake process.
• Maintain active relationships with innovation and project development teams within Clean Fuels Fund contributors.
• Lead stakeholder engagement and outreach activities to inform program design.
• Act as Proposal Advisor, providing feedback and support throughout the funding process.
• Collaborate with partners, government representatives, and other stakeholders in the innovation ecosystem.
• Technology Strategy, Impact, and Outreach: Conduct technology scouting, literature reviews, and gap analyses to inform funding program design and identify emissions reduction opportunities.
• Contribute to ERA’s technology strategy, including the Technology Roadmap and Business Plan.
• Support strategic initiatives, participate in ERA events, and represent ERA at public engagements, conferences, and workshops.
Qualifications and Skills
• Passionate about greenhouse gas reductions and committed to advancing technological innovation in Canada’s refining and fuels sectors.
• Deep technical expertise in refining and fuels sector processes, equipment, and GHG reduction technologies relevant to Canada.
• Demonstrated ability to build productive relationships across a broad range of stakeholders, especially within the refining and fuels industries.
• Strong skills in technoeconomic assessment, program planning, organization, time management, and technical communication.
• Proven collaborator, leveraging internal teams to achieve program objectives.
• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (Science or Engineering preferred).
• 8-10 years of relevant experience in energy, sustainability, project management, or related fields; direct experience in the refining and fuels sector is strongly preferred.
• Strong knowledge of scientific, engineering, sustainability, business, and project management principles.
• Excellent organizational and time-management abilities; able to balance multiple priorities and client demands.
• Familiarity with provincial, national, and global climate change policies and programs, particularly Canada’s Clean Fuels Regulation and Alberta’s TIER regulation.
• Understanding of emissions reduction and technology innovation opportunities relevant to Canada.
• Strong interpersonal skills and experience managing relationships with senior-level stakeholders.
• Flexible and adaptable to a dynamic environment; strong systems thinking and analytical skills.
• Demonstrated commitment to fairness, integrity, and excellence.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to travel as required.
