Instructional Designer (2 positions)
Start Date: As Soon As Possible
Salary Range: $66,906.27 to $90,520.25
Location: 7 Fultz
Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm (35 hours/week)
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Centre of Learning and Innovation and Institutional Effectiveness (CLIIE), the Instructional Designer provides instructional design and development of new program and course curriculum, and the revision of existing program and course curriculum, by adhering to established ADDIE and AGILE ID standards and requirements. Lead curriculum delivery analysis to propose interactive learning activities for face-to-face, blended or fully-online courses. Provide overall project management, adhering to established quality assurance, WCAG and AODA standards while delivering work on time and within the allocated budget. Lead professional development sessions in related topics for Faculty, Administration and Support Staff. The incumbent will be required to work independently and collaboratively with internal and external subject matter experts to design and develop effective, interactive, engaging, and accessible online courses and learning activities using a variety of software applications and MITT D2L, MyLearning platform within the Learning Management System. The incumbent will be knowledgeable about e-learning technology and instructional design principles, have excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills, and be able to write clearly and concisely.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Designs and develops new online courses and/or modules by:
- Establishing a project schedule or plan for each course or module, seeking feedback from supervisors, e-learning administrators, and teammates where appropriate.
- Collaborating with subject matter experts to obtain course content (e.g. provide templates to collect course content information and advice on how to effectively use the template).
- Using established templates as a guide when reviewing course content and materials provided by subject matter experts, documenting gaps and/or suggesting areas of improvement from a learner perspective.
- Scheduling regular meetings and/or communications with subject matter experts throughout the course design process · Reviewing and editing course content for proper grammar and spelling.
- Liaising with LMS Administrator to establish course shell and ensuring course access for subject matter expert review.
- Ensuring course and learning outcomes are identified and reflected in the course/module.
- Designing and developing online courses or modules, including interactive components, based on information provided by the subject matter expert and the capabilities of MITT LMS .
- Using effective application of educational multimedia, learning objects, and other technology tools (e.g. HTML, H5P, Video) ensuring compliance with any copyright rules or restrictions.
- Ensuring course and/or module meets quality standards as outlined in the quality assurance checklist including compliance with WCAG and AODA requirements.
- Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of instructional design and learning theory, technology and best practices in online course design and development .
- Ensuring that the principles of Bloom’s Taxonomy, and ADDIE and AGILE ID models are used in designing and developing online courses or modules.
Reviews and updates existing online courses and modules by:
- Engaging with the Manager to determine which existing online courses and/or modules should be reviewed and updated, where applicable.
- Establishing a project schedule or plan for each course or module review, seeking feedback from the Manager, - where appropriate.
- Engaging with the Business and Organizational Development to obtain access to course content, where applicable.
- Applying the quality standards checklist to identify opportunities for improvement to an existing online course or module.
- Appling MITT’s branding to course or module, where applicable.
- Liaising with subject matter experts, where appropriate, to ensure content and assessments are up-to-date.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications/Experience:
- Certificate, Undergraduate or Graduate degree in Instructional Design, Graphic Design, Education (specialization in Instructional Design).
- A minimum of 5 years of experience providing Instructional Design support in a post-secondary institution.
- Advanced experience working within an LMS environment.
- Previous experience working directly with SME’s in the development of educational e-learning.
Preferred Qualifications/Experience:
- Additional certificates in Adult Education, Vocational Education or Trade Certification would be an asset.
- Experience in a D2L learning management system.
- Proficiency in e-learning presentation software platforms, (PowerPoint, MindManager, Canva).
- Experience in the use of eLearning evaluation tools, Respondus and TestBank generators.
Conditions of Employment:

- Successful completion of a Criminal Record check including vulnerable sector and Child Abuse Registry Check.
