Avadh Bhatia Postdoctoral Scholar

This position has an initial appointment of 2 years.
**Location -**This role is in-person. Work primarily takes place at North Campus, Edmonton.
The Department of Physics at the University of Alberta invites applications for the Avadh Bhatia Women’s Postdoctoral Fellowship. The award is conferred to a woman who is a recent PhD graduate with a demonstrated potential for excellence in physics research. It was established by the late Mrs. June Bhatia in memory of her late husband, Professor Avadh Bhatia. The award provides a $60,000.00 annual stipend for a maximum of two years. The annual stipend includes 50% that must be provided by supervising faculty member(s) and 50% that will come from a spending allocation of an endowment.
The Department of Physics, the home department for this position, has approximately 48 faculty members with research interests in space physics, condensed matter physics, astrophysics, biophysics, geophysics and subatomic physics. The department has a wide range of infrastructure for physics experiments and access to high-performance computation.
This position has an anticipated start date on or after July 1, 2026.
The Faculty of Science is internationally recognized for excellence in research and education. Through pioneering discovery and innovation, the faculty addresses global challenges across disciplines such as biology, chemistry, computing science, physics, mathematics, and earth sciences. Its work positions the university at the forefront of technological, environmental, and scientific advancement.
The Postdoctoral Scholar will possess a PhD in Physics or a related field and conduct research in the successful candidate’s chosen research area.
- PhD awarded within five years before the start date.
- PhD awarded in Physics or a related field.

- Contact one or more of the Department of Physics Faculty Members in your field of research to provide a letter of nomination. Your nominator will act as your supervisor during your fellowship.
- Obtain three (3) letters of reference (one of which can be from the nominator).
- Prepare a CV and a statement of research interests.
- Confirm that requirements for the PhD were completed no more than 36 months (with exemptions for documented maternity, parental, or medical leave) prior to the anticipated starting date of the fellowship.
Combine all the above documents into a single .pdf file and apply online. The deadline for applications is May 31, 2026.
