The opportunity

Looking for more than just an accounting role? As Financial Coordinator with the Office of the Vice-President (Research & International), you will be at the centre of financial planning and research support for one of the University's most impactful portfolios. From managing operating and research budgets to advising on financial best practices and supporting innovative research activities, you'll have the opportunity to influence decisions that drive discovery, collaboration, and institutional success. The qualifications and experience we’re looking for

One year of experience in an accounting-related position with knowledge of accounting theory and practice is required. Sound knowledge of university policies and procedures, especially related to finance, is required. Experience in interpreting and applying policies, procedures, and guidelines is required. Experience with full-cycle accounting, budget oversight, and preparing financial reports is required, with experience in research accounting preferred. Experience communicating financial information to non-financial staff is an asset. Knowledge of University of Manitoba financial systems (i.e Aurora/FAST/Banner/Concur/EPIC/VIP) an asset. An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Proficiency in MS Office 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams) required. Excellent budgetary and accounting skills are required. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required. High level of accuracy is required. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills with a demonstrated ability to work independently and accurately under pressure is required. Strong attention to detail is required. Ability to present data and reports in a concise manner is required. Logical thinking and reasoning abilities are required. Ability to meet deadlines and prioritize tasks is required. Ability to multi-task proactively is required. High degree of tact, diplomacy, discretion, and professionalism in daily contacts within the University is required. Understanding financial planning and complex accounting issues is required. A satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required. Maintenance and oversight of the Vice President (Research and International) and its reporting units/centres’ operating and income budgets Budget and research fund maintenance of all reporting units in conjunction with Directors. Prepares financial reports as requested by the Directors of VPRI. (eg. quarterly balances). Performs quarterly salary maintenance, journal entries, and budget adjustments, submits to Director, Research Finance of VPRI for approval. Prepares detailed reviews and summaries of the financial activities for the Directors and the Director, Research Finance of VPRI for review (e.g., Quarterly Operating Financial Review, Quarterly Salary Budget Maintenance). Liaises with the Director, Research Finance on behalf of reporting units for budgetary, income, research fund, and financial matters, works with specified units to ensure expenditures are in line with the allocated budget and guidelines. Prepares the University's Forecasting and Carryover exercises in conjunction with Units' and Centres' Directors, submits to the Director, Research Finance of VPRI for approval. Provides information to the Directors about available funds for staffing and other ongoing expenditures. Provides on-going oversight of all operating budgets making sure that all reporting units are adhering to the university policies. Acts as an alternate signing authority for operating, income, and research fund budgets within the VPRI and its reporting units. Prepares external invoices and journal entries for the VPRI offices. Oversees interdepartmental charges with the reporting units. Ensures maintenance of capital assets with reporting units. Oversees the Monthly Operating Reconciliation (MOR) with the reporting units; makes corrections to follow policies, procedures, and best practices. Maintains and reconciles the use of the Corporate Visa cards, as required. Provides back-up on Concur expense approvals for VPRI and its reporting units. Prepares access forms for new and existing employees for financial systems (i.e Aurora, Concur, EPIC, Travel card applications, etc). Verifies that all pay authorizations are reviewed, signed, and filed. Initiates institutional research support transfers to Financial Analysis Reporting for processing. Assist with fiscal year-end deadlines and communications with reporting units and centres. Coordinates the distribution of the Annual Planning and Budget Development (APBP) templates to reporting units and centres for compilation of VPRI's overall budget submission. Financial Maintenance of assigned research funds in conjunction with the related Units' Directors and/or the Project Coordinator/Lead (prepares financial reports and forecasts, monitors eligible spending guidelines, liaises with external funders, etc.). Assists with the University's Federal Research Support Fund process managed by the Director, Research Finance. Oversees the process of allocating and maintaining research start-up funds to new researchers. Ensures completeness of approved start-up requests received from the Faculties. Coordinates allocation of research start-up funds (Drafts approval memos, maintains financial records, transfers the funds to the new research start-up fund, and monitors balances). Liaises with Faculty Admin Assistants on guidelines and inquiries. Other duties as assigned.
